How to Set up a Group DM in Discord

How to Set up a Group DM in Discord

September 25, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Discord is a multi-platform communications app designed for gamers, although it’s great for non-gamers too. Most people primarily communicate through public or invite-only servers or use Direct Messages or DMs. One of the generally under-appreciated discord features is the group DM.

Group DMs allow you to have a private chat with up to ten people without having to set up a server and configure any permissions or channels. With group DMs, you can send text messages as well as emojis, pictures, and other embedded and linked content. You can also start a voice or video call with the entire group, although they don’t all have to join. Additionally, you can share your screen, which can be useful if you want to demonstrate how to do something or guide someone else through a process.

How to set up a group DM

There are two ways to set up a group DM, the first is to open an existing one-to-one DM, then click the “Add Friends to DM” icon, which can be found just to the left of the search bar in the top-right corner.

Note: This method won’t invite someone into your existing DM, rather it will create a new group DM featuring you, the person whose DM you were in, and the users you choose to invite.

Tip: This doesn’t work in group DMs as you’ll just invite them to the existing DM rather than creating a new one.

In an existing one-to-one DM, click the “Add friends to DM” icon to create a new DM with you, your friend, and whoever you choose to invite.

Alternatively, you can create an entirely new DM from the “Friends” screen, by clicking the “New Group DM” icon in the top-right corner.

You can also click on the “New Group DM” icon in the top-right corner of the “Friends” screen.

Setting up a group DM with either method is simple, however, to invite someone to a group DM you need to be Discord friends. Simply tick the names of the people you want to add or search for them in the text box. Once, you’ve selected all the names you want to add, click “Create Group DM”.

Select the friends you want to add, then click “Create Group DM”.

Once you’ve created a group DM, anyone in the DM can invite their friends too. So, as long as at least one member is friends with anyone you want to invite, things are easy. Alternatively, you can click “generate link” to generate in invite link to the group DM.

Note: These options are only available after a group DM has been created.
