When it comes to the best smartwatches for Android, the options for Wear OS devices are pretty limited. Much like the smartphone market, Samsung has a stranglehold on the market. This trend continues with the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.
However, while Samsung didn’t really do much to change up the design of its latest smartwatches, the company did shift over to Google’s Wear OS instead of sticking with TizenOS. Unfortunately, this move has been met with some battery issues, with users complaining about the battery of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic draining fast. Today, we’re taking a look at a few different ways that you can try to fix those problems.
Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Draining Fast? How to Fix
Check for a Software Update
The first and most obvious step you want to take is to ensure that your Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is running the latest software version available. Samsung makes it much easier nowadays. These software updates don’t take very long unless major new features are included.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- Tap the Settings tab.
- Select About Watch.
- Tap Update Watch Software.
- If an update is available, tap the Update now button.
Another reason why your Galaxy Watch 4 Classic could be draining fast is because you have apps that need to be updated. Sometimes, these apps are updated when you update the Watch’s software, but you might also want to check to update these apps manually.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- Tap the Settings tab.
- Select Galaxy Store.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
- Tap My Page.
- Wait for the list to refresh.
- Tap the Update All button at the top of the screen.
- You can also tap the Update icon next to each app individually.
Close Background Apps
Keeping with the trend of apps, just like with your phone, rogue apps running in the background can wreak havoc on your battery life. And Samsung has also made it possible to get rid of those apps in the background, closing all necessary processes simultaneously. Here’s how you can close background apps on your Galaxy Watch 4:
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- Tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the page.
- Select About watch.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap the CLEAN NOW button.
- Go back to the previous screen.
- Tap RAM.
- Tap the CLEAN NOW button.
Turn off Health Features
The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is packed with a slew of health and fitness tracking features. And these go far beyond just being able to keep track of your steps. Various sensors are being used to provide measurements for things like your heart rate and blood pressure. Unfortunately, having these all enabled on your Watch can result in unwanted or unexpected battery drain. Here’s how you can turn off those health features on your Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.
- Open the apps page on your Galaxy Watch 4.
- Select Samsung Health from the list of apps.
- Tap the Health menu to turn the feature off.
- With the Samsung app open, scroll down and tap Settings.
- Tap the toggle to turn the feature off.
- Tap OK to confirm.
Turn off Network Connections
Another reason why the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic battery is draining fast could be due to your network connections. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is equipped with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and there are some models with an LTE modem. Trying to search for connectivity doesn’t play well with battery life, especially if the connection is spotty. So, in that case, you’ll want to turn off those connections.
- From your Watch, open the Settings app.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap the toggle next to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- If you have an LTE-enabled Galaxy Watch, tap the toggle next to Mobile Networks.
The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will be disconnected from your phone if you turn off Bluetooth. So to re-establish that connection, you’ll need to turn Bluetooth back on.
Turn off The Always-on Display
When it comes to smartwatches, the main reason to wear one all the time is to check the time. And to help save battery life, some watch faces are equipped with an Always-on Display. This allows you to check the time at just a glance without actually needing to have the watch face turned on. But this can still cause unnecessary battery drain, especially if you are already low on juice. Here’s how you can turn off the Always-on Display.
- Open the Settings app on your Watch.
- Tap Display.
- Select Watch Faces.
- Tap Watch Always On.
- Tap the toggle to turn the feature off.
Turn off Bixby Wake-Up
The company has its own dedicated voice assistant with Samsung phones, similar to Siri or Google Assistant. Unfortunately, Bixby is nowhere near as helpful and instead tends to be accidentally activated. A setting built into your Watch allows for automatic voice recognition so that Bixby can be prompted with just a phrase. If you want to turn off Bixby Wake-up, here are the steps that you need to take:
- From your Watch, open the Bixby (or S Voice) app.
- Tap the three vertical dots on the right side of the screen.
- Voice wake-up.
- Tap the toggle to turn off Bixby or S Voice wake-up.
Customize Your Notifications
Along with checking the time, having a smartwatch like the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic makes it easy to check what notifications are coming through. But if you have hundreds of notifications every day, this can wear out the battery pretty quickly. Here’s how you can prune back the number of notifications that appear throughout the day.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your Android phone.
- Tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the page.
- Select Notifications.
- Tap the toggle next to the following:
- Auto show details – When off, new notifications details will not be automatically shown.
- Turn on screen – When off, your watch screen will not turn on when notifications are received.
You can also manually turn off notifications for different apps that could be wreaking havoc on your battery life. For example, you could turn off notifications for the Google app, as it has a tendency to send random notifications throughout the day.
Turn on Power Saving Mode
One of the most convenient features of our smartphones and smartwatches is the built-in Power Saving Mode. In most cases, this is enabled automatically when your watch drops below 20%. Still, you might want to manually enable it to help save battery at certain times.
- Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Select Power Saving.
- Tap the checkmark to enable Power Saving Mode.
You can also turn on Power Saving Mode by swiping down from the Home Screen. Then, tap the Battery icon from the drop-down quick settings menu. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Did not help at all. I tried to follow directions to see why my watch drains after about 5 hours. The directions above says to go to settings on watch, galaxy store and click the three vertical dots. I was able to go to settings but there was no galaxy store therefore I could not click the 3 vertical dots. Absolutely nothing helped because your directions were not match did not match my phone

My best tip for not worrying about the battery: turn on every feature that you want to use and pop the watch on the charger when it’s convenient.
I do:
– charge at my work desk mid-day when I’m not using my watch anyway,
– charge at night while reading in bed – it takes <30 mins,
– charge on-the-go when I'm out for 16+ hours using a fob that plugs into any USB port and has a battery for truly portable top-offs. It's like 2" x 2" and fits in a pocket.
Fiddling with settings and disabling key features isn't a solution to less-than-a-day battery capacity. Occasional charging – even just 10 minutes while showering – fixes it.

Turn off the smart features to get it to work? I may as well draw a watch on my wrist with permanent marker

Why in the world would anyone buy one of these useless watches? Super expensive and IF you want your battery to last more than 15 hours, you have to shut down all the features. ” And turn it off every night and charge it.”. Useless.
