What Are EXR Files?

What Are EXR Files?

January 21, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

EXR files are a type of raster image files that store images in the OpenEXR format. This dynamic-range image format was developed by Industrial Light & Magic and supports various different types of visuals, including multi-layer images, 16- and 32-bit pixels, deep raster images. They can be used both with lossy and lossless compression algorithms, making them very versatile.

How can you open EXR files?

A variety of graphics editing programs work with this filetype. Most file viewers will be able to open EXR, although they won’t be able to do much with them. In order to take advantage of things like multi-layer setups and the like, a suitable editing program is needed.

What programs work with EXR files?

Common programs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and Adobe SpeedGrade can use this filetype. It’s worth noting that to do so, they need the ProEXR plug-in. Programs like MacPhun ColorStrokes and Serif PhotoPlus can use this format without needing any add-ons.
