How to Turn off 5G on the Galaxy Z Fold 5

How to Turn off 5G on the Galaxy Z Fold 5

September 5, 2023 by Andrew Myrick 5 Comments

Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed the gradual rollout of the next-generation cellular networks. The arrival of 5G has caused a buzz, with major carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all working to bring 5G connectivity to the masses. The pace of these rollouts has varied, with Verizon’s being a bit slower while T-Mobile has already expanded its coverage to a larger number of customers.

5G stands apart from its predecessor, the familiar 4G LTE networks. This new technology operates across three distinct frequency bands, all designed to deliver faster speeds than LTE. Take, for instance, Verizon’s employment of mmWave technology, which taps into high-frequency spectrums to achieve speeds of up to 10Gbps. Compare that to LTE’s maximum of around 12Mbps, and the appeal of 5G becomes evident. It’s no wonder that both carriers and smartphone manufacturers are rallying behind 5G.

In the past year, virtually every major smartphone release has boasted compatibility with 5G networks, regardless of your carrier preference. Even the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 come equipped with this feature. After all, who wouldn’t want a cutting-edge phone with network speeds that defy expectations?

Step-by-Step Guide to Turning Off 5G on Galaxy Z Fold 5

The challenge with 5G is that it’s still not quite as reliable for everyone as the LTE connection that we’ve been enjoying for years. While it might work pretty darn well when you have access to it, especially 5G Ultra Wideband (5G UW/mmwave), it’s not as widespread and as available. If you leave the 5G antenna enabled on your Galaxy Z Fold 5 but rarely experience 5G speeds, you might find your battery life suffering.

Consider this: Why keep something turned on if you can’t truly utilize it? This is the mindset for many individuals, prioritizing battery longevity over lightning-fast network downloads.

So, let’s delve into how you can disable 5G on your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Z Fold .
  2. Tap Connections.
  3. Scroll down and select Mobile Networks.
  4. Tap Network Mode.
  5. From the drop-down, tap LTE / CDMA (if Verizon).
    • If on AT&T or T-Mobile, tap LTE / GSM / UMTS
  6. Restart your Z Fold 5.

Note: Depending on your carrier and whether your phone is unlocked or purchased from a carrier, you may find there are fewer options available under Network Mode. If this is the case, your carrier may be blocking your ability to turn off 5G, and there’s unfortunately nothing you can do about that.

Why Turn 5G Off?

Turning off 5G won’t necessarily save a significant amount of battery, as your phone isn’t constantly searching for a 5G tower. However, if you’re frequently traveling between areas with and without 5G, it could affect your battery life. If extra speed isn’t critical, or you’re concerned about battery life, you may prefer to leave your 5G off for now.

Conclusion

Turning off 5G on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a simple process that can be done in just a few steps. Whether you want to conserve battery life or prefer to use 4G in areas with spotty 5G coverage, these instructions will help you customize your connectivity options. Remember, you can always switch 5G back on whenever you want.

Not all carriers offer these options.

This doesn’t help at all. There is no “Network Mode.” Even your screenshot doesn’t have Network Mode. It says Network Operators and there is ZERO option for 5g or LTE there.
