Slack: How To Disable Workspace Wide Notifications of a New User Joining

Slack: How To Disable Workspace Wide Notifications of a New User Joining

February 7, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Naturally, users are key to the existence of Slack workspaces. Without them, there’s no one to post or read messages. Having new users join a workspace can be a lifeline for struggling community workspaces. In this sort of example, having a workspace wide notification go out, announcing that a new user has joined can be good as, it encourages other members to welcome them.

Larger workspaces, such as popular community workspaces, may have issues with regular notifications constantly bothering people as new users join regularly. In the workspace of a big corporate company, new hires would also be relatively common although these would tend to be grouped around the start of the week – and not everyone needs to know about the three interns that just joined the HR department.

If you want to disable the workspace wide notifications of new users joining, you need to browse to the workspace settings and permissions page. To get there, you first need to click on the workspace name in the top-right corner. Next, in the dropdown menu, select “Settings & administration”, then “Workspace settings” to open the workspace settings in a new tab.

To get to the workspace settings, click on the workspace name in the sidebar, then select “Settings & administration” and “Workspace settings”.

In the default “Settings” tab, click on the “Expand” button for the “Notify of new users” settings.

Click “Expand” next to “Notify of new users” in the default “Settings” tab.

In the “Notify of new users” section, untick (or tick!) the checkbox labelled “Notify everyone when a new teammate joins”, then click “Save” to apply the change.

Untick the checkbox labelled “Notify everyone when a new teammate joins”, then click “Save”.

Receiving notifications when a new user joins a workspace can be nice, in relatively small workspaces, in larger more popular workspaces this can result in an unnecessary stream of notifications for users. By following the steps in this guide, you can disable the notifications sent whenever any user joins your workspace.
