Mitch BartlettJune 6, 2017 Comments (12)

If you experience problems with your Google Nexus 7 tablet, you can reset it with just a few simple steps.

  • 1 Soft Reset
  • 2 Hard Reset
    • 2.1 From Android Settings
    • 2.2 Hard reset from startup
  • 3 FAQ

Soft Reset

A soft reset will reset your device if it has become frozen and is not responding to commands. Data will not be wiped from the device when performing a soft reset.

  • To perform a soft reset, simply press and hold the “Volume Down” and “Power” buttons until the screen shuts off. You should then be able to power on the device normally.

Hard Reset

If you wish to clear all data off of your Nexus 7 and reset it to factory default settings, a hard reset will accomplish this for you.

From Android Settings

If you have access to the Settings section of the Nexus 7,  simply go to Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset > Reset tablet > Erase everything.

Hard reset from startup

If the Nexus 7 will not start, you may need to perform these steps.

  1. With the device powered off, press and hold “Volume Up“, “Volume Down” and “Power” simultaneously.
  2. When you see the Android guy laying on his back, let go of all three buttons.
  3. Press “Volume Down” two times to select “Recovery mode“.
  4. Press the “Power” button to choose the selection.
  5. Another Android guy should appear on the screen. Press and hold “Power“, then press “Volume Up“.
  6. Use the volume buttons to toggle the selection to “wipe data / factory reset“.
  7. Press the “Power” button to choose the selection.
  8. Use the volume buttons to select “Yes“.
  9. Press the “Power” button to choose the selection.

Be patient as the Nexus 7 completes the hard reset process. Once finished, you can restart the device and it will be set to factory default settings.

FAQ

Why is my Nexus 7 won’t start or is stuck in a boot loop?

Ensure you have the device plugged into a wall outlet for at least an hour if you are experiencing these problems. Try a reset after an hour has elapsed while keeping the device plugged into the wall.

If that doesn’t work, you may need to contact Asus for service.

I have done a rather silly thing, because of some confounded adverts I couldn’t get rid of, I uninstalled Chrome (on my Nexus 7 2013) and a few other google apps/icons I didn’t think I needed.
Now my Nexus 7 won’t start, it goes through the process of the pretty icons and then android shows, Then it opens and processes android apps to 39 then it just repeats the process and won’t open or allow any intervention.
I can switch onto a soft reset, but it won’t allow itself to be switched to a hard reset, holding down the power button and up and down volume has no effect.
Would you have any thoughts or advice please….

I found my sister’s old tablet and thought I can use it with my students but she doesn’t remember the pattern to unlock it. I tried to reset the nexus tablet but after getting to recovery mode with the android lying down and it’s cover open, pressing the power and up buttons did not bring me to the selection screen to click wipe data/factory reset. The screen just goes completely black and if I continue to press it, the google word comes on and then off after about 10 seconds. This repeats if I continue to press it. Please help!

Can only get to the first lying-down-android. Restart bootloader and/or recovery mode all go back to the locked Google screen.

Asus doesn’t have any Nexus links that I can find on their site.
    Where to go for help?

I used the procedures described above, and although I got to the lying down robot, I always ended up back at the lockscreen, and was not able to do a “Hard RESET”
