After recording videos with my smartphone, I often need to trim parts of the video files. Fortunately, Microsoft Windows 10 has tools that provide an easy way to trim video. Just follow these steps.
- Right-click the video file, and choose “Open with” > “Photos“.
- Select the “Trim” button located at the upper-right portion of the window.
- Slide the two white sliders to where the portion of the video you wish to keep is in between them. The blue slider only shows the current frame and has no bearing on trimming.
- Once you have the area of the video you wish to keep selected, click the “Save a copy” option located at the upper-right portion of the window.
- Give the video file a new name. Once saved, it will be the new trimmed version of the video.

Worked very well.! Big Thanks!

Right-click the video file, and choose “Open with” > “Photos“.
To edit a video, you select Photos? Not intuitive.
Looks like the examples are seven years old (2015). “Save a Copy is now called “Save As” and I get an error message saying “It looks as though you don’t have permission to save changes to this file. Try saving a copy instead.”
Well, saving a copy is no longer there. How can I not have permission to my own video file?

Thank you so much!. Perfect

Thank you very much!! I had a simple trim job, a few minutes off the start and a few minutes off the end of an MP4 video. I tried to flail my way through Camtasia (first use, not very intuitive UI) and figured there had to be an easier way to do a simple job like mine. And there is, and you describe it perfectly–and that’s coming from a professional tech writer in a Principal Writer position who appreciates clear procedures. Well done!
Pawan says
When I am clicking Trim button it is opening some other window which automatically gets closed and nothing happens to my video. Even Photos also get closed & I am unable to trim my video.
Can you please help

Was having trouble with saving the trimmed MP4 from Photos on WIN10, but discovered that the folder had gotten marked as “read-only.” Changed that for the folders (and also took the option to change it for all files on the folder) and that did the trick.
Some people asked about making several short segments. Seems like that could be done by trimming the initial file repeatedly, once for each short segment.
Another request was for a way to cut a section from the middle of the original MP4. I don’t know a trick for that, unless there is a way to somehow join two clips. .

THanks It helped

THIS was awesome! I finally searched for how to shorten a video instead of software to edit videos. I could never learn how to edit in a new program and it was very frustrating. I know several programs from years of working on them, but do not enjoy trying to figure out new programs that don’t look similar or use similar functions. Your instructions were clear and concise. I did what I set out to this. This will help me with many videos. Thank you a million times over.

The great tool. Thank you!

I NEED TO CUT A SEQUENCE INSIDE THE VIDEO NOT JUST ON THE SIDES. It would improve the editing tool a lot if I could delete the part “inside the markers” as well not just outside.

Mine used to have the trimming option and now its gone. How do I get it back? Need to know ASAP
Nick Nikon says
Nah, can’t use it. It’s not granular enough. I want to cut at a specific frame (or at least set of frames.) This won’t let me do that. It pops around too much.

How can I cut out a section from the middle of the video? We had a technical difficulty during a recorded meeting and had to “wing it” for about 10 seconds. I just want to cut out this 10 seconds that is in the middle of the video and connect the front section with the end section, minus this 10 seconds. Is this possible?

I was hoping to find a feature that it had where it allowed you to cut the video into at least four sections.
Each about 15 minutes long.
So the max length the photo’s trim feature could handle would be 15 min long clips, cut up into fours.
It’d be nice of MS, to add this feature.
Blair Shawn says
Thank you! This method is indeed easy enough, but will it cause any quality degradation?
At least Joyoshare Media cutter that I’m using now will not. This software is also a perfect to trim videos.
Beside, you can convert the format with the tool.

HI, has anyone had the challenge that once the video is trimmed, the play back is really fast? It is if trimming it has corrupted the audio. Am I the only one?
Laura says
This worked! Thank you so much!!
Ari says
Anyone know why this basically doubles the size of the file, when in theory I should be reducing the size by reducing the length? Or a better question: is there a setting somewhere where I can set the compression or processing settings so that it keeps or reduces the file size? I don’t need uber-high-definition video on 99% of the files I’ll be working with.
Thanks

How does one trim top and bottom of a Mp4 Video ?????!!!
Iggy J. says
I didn’t have permissions to save either and resetting didn’t fix problem. I circumvented problem by:
1. Right-click video and Open with Photos.
2. Select Edit & Create>Add animated text
3. At top left, click Trim, then adjust blue sliding markers for start/finish time.
4. Click Save a Copy.
5. Optional step: Click more options and uncheck box Use Hardware accel…
6. Click Export, then Export again.
Laurence says
Thank you for this. I trimmed the end off an MP4 from 102 minutes to 88 minutes 18 seconds.
The video quality is only very mildly degraded, and does not matter for my purpose in this case.
My concern is that the FILE SIZE HAS INCREASED from 399,574 KB original to 792.917 KB trimmed.
Looks like I will be doing this the slow way with VLC Media Player instead.
jan says
Sadly it just took me to the same place I had previously reached under my own steam. The blue line never completes the last tiny bit. I can see a file where I saved the trimmed video but it can’t be opened. I guess because the edit hasn’t finalised. I have left it for ages (long enough to go and get breakfast prepared!). Totally stuck!! Any suggestions? A solution would get undying gratitude!!
Jenny Jhung says
Oh I see that it is only when I playback with the Windows photos program, not the Windows player program.
They must be thumbnails for the video file.
Thanks so much for your help.
Now I just have to figure out how to merge the clipped files :)
Jenny Jhung says
Following your instructions I was able to cut the video into shorter clips.
But, when I replay, there is always a slide in the beginning and at the end that is from the middle of the trimmed video. How can I remove this slide/image?
richard says
Wow that was perfect. Never would have looked there.
Sajjad says

John Anson says

This is fantastic! I have so many video files, I’m having memory concerns. This is so easy and whether I trim 5 seconds, 5 minutes or an hour it reduces the size of the video file by more than half! I don’t see any quality issues in the trimmed files. Is it compression? I don’t know – I’m trimming all my video files – no more memory concerns!
Lauren says
Super helpful! Edited two videos with no issues. Mine were both 50-60 mins, so just as a note for others if it is a longer clip the screen will kind of gray out for a little while to process. You’ll think it’s not working, but give it a few minutes.
Thanks for posting.
Jan says
THANK YOU JOHN! (1st post)
You MUST use the WHITE slider to be able to save!
John says
Thank you. You were the only one that gave me the critical piece of information that I needed to make it work. Specifically the “white” slider bars, not the blue one! Noone else made this clear. If you don’t use the white sliders the “Save a copy” will not become active.
You might also want to mention that the quality is “somewhat” degraded in the trimmed version; not seriously, but it does appear to be not quite as clear. The file size is less than half of the original and I only trimmed 5 secs off a 1:45 sec video.
Thanks again.
Phil says
It worked perfectly for me, thanks!

I’ve tried to trim my video clip on two different types of computers and each time the clip is sped up. What can I do to avoid this problem ?
Paul says
The trim worked, and saved. BUT … the original was 482 mb and the trimmed copy is 1.51 gb … almost 4 times the original size!!!! That really doesn’t help.
JennyD says
After you do the trim and you know the beginning and end is where you’ve marked it, go to the top right of the “photos” screen and use the drop down to choose ‘save as’. The file will go to wherever you designated BUT it is not ready to play yet. Notice that on the ‘photos’ page where you did the trim, that a blue line is now in the middle of the screen and moving slowly. That is film actually getting ready to be complete. Wait for it to finish and then you can close out ‘photos’ and go to your file and it will play.
Trimmer says
DO NOT FOLLOW THIS GUIDE
Trimming video using Windows Photos reduces the quality of the trimmed video and worst of all reduces frame rate from 60FPS to 30FPS.
