How to Record WhatsApp Call

How to Record WhatsApp Call

Posted on April 23, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

If you’re having an important call over WhatsApp, you may want to record the audio for your personal records. Unfortunately, WhatsApp doesn’t support this feature by default, so you have to find other solutions. Unhelpfully, even with separate recording software, you can’t record audio on desktop platforms. Neither the WhatsApp web nor desktop client support even making voice or video calls, so it’s impossible to record any calls there.

You can record audio and video calls on Android, you just need third-party apps to do so and it’s unfortunately not particularly simple. In this guide, we’ll cover how to use “Call Recorder – Cube ACR” to record audio calls. We’ll also cover how to use “AZ Screen Recorder – Video Recorder, Livestream” to record the screen during video calls. Unfortunately, it is not possible to do the same thing on iOS. You can use the built-in Screen Recording functionality to capture a video call, but you won’t get any audio. You can also use voice memo apps such as “Voice Recorder” to record your side of the conversation. However, you can’t record incoming audio from a call, that feature is simply not supported. If you really need to record a call, try setting your iPhone on speaker and recording the call with another device.

Tip: For a complete experience on any device, use another phone, a computer, or a voice recorder app in order to record your calls.

Android – Video Calls

The app “AZ Screen Recorder – Video Recorder, Livestream”, available for free here on the Google Play Store, can be used to record the screen while making video calls. Unfortunately, it can’t record the audio as well, so you would need to do that separately.

To install the app, tap “Install” on the app page in the Play Store. Once the app has installed, tap “Launch” or tap the app icon to open it. You’ll need to grant the “Draw over other apps” permission when prompted – this allows it to appear on top of other apps, which it will then do.

You can access the settings by tapping on the overlay icon on the left, then tap the cog-wheel icon. Even if you ensure that “Audio” is enabled, your video will be silent, and changing the audio source from “Microphone” to “Internal Audio” won’t fix that either.

Tap the AZ Screen Recorder overlay icon to see the settings icon at the top and the record icon in the centre.

To record a video, tap the overlay icon, then tap the video camera icon. The video will start recording after the three-second countdown is complete. Once the video has started recording you can switch into WhatsApp and make your video call. To stop the recording, open your notifications bar and tap the stop icon. When the recording is stopped, the video will automatically save to the file location set in the configuration options.

Android – Voice Calls

Recording the screen during a video call is all well and good, but realistically, recording the audio is key. To help with that. the app “Call Recorder – Cube ACR”, available for free here on the Google Play Store, can be used to record the audio from voice or video calls.

To install the app, tap “Install” on the app page in the Play Store. Once the app has installed, tap “Launch”, or tap the app icon to open it. You’ll need to grant a number of permissions, including screen overlay, access to contacts and a connection feature that will allow the app to record audio from WhatsApp. Once you’ve granted all the permissions, you can just switch to WhatsApp and make a call. The Cube ACR widget will appear on the right-hand side of the screen and will light up when you talk.

The Cube ACR widget will appear on the right of the screen and light up as you speak.

If you get an error message or can’t hear the other person’s voice, open Cube ACR’s settings and enable “Force VoIP calls as voice call”, in “Recording settings” and try again, this should resolve the issue. If you still can’t hear audio try, changing the “Phone recording audio source” by tapping on the setting in “Recording settings” and selecting a new audio source.

Try changing your audio source if incoming audio is not being recorded.

Tip: It’s highly recommended that you make some test calls to check that your audio is recording properly, before you try to use it for an important call. This will give you time to resolve any issues and identify what settings work for you.
