Outlook: Error “An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed…”

Mitch BartlettApril 14, 2017 Comments (4)

You may get an error when you try to write an email in Microsoft Outlook:

Microsoft Word is set to be your e-mail editor. However, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not the same version as Outlook. The Outlook e-mail editor will be used instead. An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run setup again for the program.

I personally received this error message when selecting the “Send/Receive” button.

To try to fix this problem, perform the following steps.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Select the “Start” button, then type “cmd“.
  3. Right-click “Command Prompt”, then choose “Run as Administrator“.
  4. In the command prompt type the following, then press “Enter“:
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
In some cases, you may need to type:
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\ole32.dll

You should get a response that says the registration succeeded. Select “OK” and try Outlook again.

If the error message still appears, try the following:

Note: You may lose some data or settings.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Navigate to “C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook“
  3. Delete and clear all files located in the “Outlook” folder so that it is empty.
  4. Open Outlook, and it should re-create and update its data source and function correctly.

Thanks to Somajde for this fix.
