How to Create and Manage a Workspace in Opera

How to Create and Manage a Workspace in Opera

March 17, 2022 by Judy Sanhz 3 Comments

You use your computer for just about everything. Just because you turn it on doesn’t mean you’re going to be working. Maybe you need to look for some flights or for the perfect present. But, sometimes, you end up doing both simultaneously, saving as much time as possible.

The issue with doing two things simultaneously is that you’ll open so many browsers you’ll have a hard time finding things. Trust me, you don’t want the same chaos with your Android apps on your browser. But, if you have two different workspaces for what you need to do, you’ll be able to get things done a lot faster.

How to Enable Workspaces on Opera

To start using Opera workspace, you’ll need to enable it. You can do that by clicking on the three dots you’ll find at the bottom left-hand corner.

Opera workspace

When you click on the dots, a new window will appear. The option to enable the workspace is at the top. Toggle it on, and as long as you’re there, you can create your first workspace. Click on the Add more option to create the workspace.

Creating Opera workspace

You’ll be asked to add an icon to your newly created workspace and a name. If you don’t feel like doing that now, you can always leave it for later. You can choose from various emojis that best describe your workspace. Once you’ve named your workspace, don’t forget to click on the Save button.

As you create workspaces, they will appear here. If you ever want to remove a workspace, click on the dots to the right of the name and click on the Remove option. If you happen to have that workspace open, Opera will warn you that you have it open. It’ll let you know how many windows and tabs you have open. After that, you decide if you close it or leave it open.

Opera workspace emojis

If you ever want to change the workspace’s name, you can do so by clicking on the dots at the bottom right. When the window opens, click on the dots to the side of the workspace and choose the edit option. That’ll let you choose a new emoji and change the name.

How to Access Your New Workspace

You’re done creating your new workspace. Or, maybe you created more than one. You can access them in the sidebar. Near the top, you’ll see the icons of the spaces you created. Simply click on the one you want to access, and Opera will show you that specific workspace.

How to Move Tabs to Another Opera Workspace

You opened a tab on your workspace that you would like to move. To do this, you’ll need to right-click on the tab you want to move and place the cursor on the Move tab to workspace option. A side menu will appear will all the available workspaces. Choose one the tab will be moved. Simply follow the same steps if you ever need to move the tab back.

Conclusion

When working, it’s important to stay organized. That way, you can find what you need faster. By using the workspaces on Opera, you can work and get some personal things done at the same time without losing time. You can create as many workspaces as you want and edit them later. Have you tried using a session manager, like “Tab Session Manager” (which I seem to recall was in the chrome extension store). It’s got a light blue icon. I’ve been using it on firefox for years, and it works. When M$ CrashOS 10 crashes (often for updates, always without my permission), Tab Session Manager saves the day everyday time.

I’ve never used workspaces, but then, I’ve only been using Opera for a few days, since firefox esr started crashing constantly. The one thing I don’t like about Opera is it tends to lose tabs, usually ones at the right side of the tab bar….it’s as if they just fall off the end.

Re Mike’s comment, it doesn’t seem to be much better in Opera GX. I haven’t had crashes, but putting tabs into workspaces doesn’t hold across sessions. That there’s no warning about that is pretty unfriendly UX—it never occurred to me all tabs would disappear, as I’ve used workspaces successfully in plain Opera before.

Can you save Workspace tabs? – NO?!

If you opera crashes (which happens) and you have 5 workspaces with 20 tams each. You will loose your workspaces as Opera ONLY saves ALL atbs NOT workspaces. SDO you will end up with a mess of 100 tabs saved in one place and empty workspaces. Making workspaces hazardous and useless. It is really beyond me why Opera DOES NOT save workspaces as it should. With tabs in each workspace correspondingly. Just throws them all in one bokkmars tab. Stupid. I stopped using Opera because of that. It crashed too many times rendering all my workspaces useless mess. I refuse to use Opera until this is fixed. Till this time, DO NOT use workspaces. It’s dangerous.
