ChromeOS laptops feature excellent battery life. Unfortunately, just like everything man-made, your Chromebook may sometimes fail to work as intended. Many users complained about a strange red exclamation mark appearing on the battery indicator all of a sudden. The red exclamation mark indicates the battery is not charging. Let’s explore what you can do to fix this problem.

What to Do if There’s an Exclamation Mark on Your Chromebook Battery

Reset Your Battery Connection

  1. Connect the charger to your Chromebook’s port.
  2. Then press and hold the Refresh and Power keys for about 5 seconds.power-and-refresh-keys-chromebook
    • Note: This key combo allows you to reset your Chromebook hardware.
  3. Keep on holding those keys, and unplug the charger.
  4. You can then release the keys.
  5. Wait for 30 seconds, and then plug in the charger.
  6. Press the Power button to boot up the device.

If the issue persists, repeat the steps above three or five times to fully reset the battery connection.

Remove Your Battery

Take out your battery, wait a few minutes and then put it back in. Plug in the charger and wait for 30 minutes. If the red exclamation mark is still there, simply ignore it. After 30 minutes, restart your Chromebook, and check if the problem persists.

Some users also suggested leaving the Chromebook plugged in for 5 or 6 hours to allow the battery to recalibrate and take a full charge. Give this workaround a try, and check if it works for you as well.

Get a New Battery

If the red exclamation mark won’t go away, insert a new battery and check if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, this indicates your old battery was faulty. Replacing your defective battery with a new one should fix the problem.

Conclusion

A red exclamation mark on your Chromebook’s battery indicates your device is not charging properly. To fix the problem, press and hold the Refresh and Power keys to reset your battery connection. If the issue persists, remove your battery for a few minutes. If this method doesn’t work either, then most likely your battery is faulty and you need to get a new one. Which of these solutions worked for you? Let us know in the comments below.
