Bluetooth

September 3, 2019 by Mel Hawthorne

Bluetooth is a type of digital connection service. Often used to connect one mobile device to either another mobile or stationary device, this digital packet radio service uses a 2.4 Ghz frequency and has a very limited range of about 30 feet. Connected devices can exchange data at up to 1MBPS transfer rate. Necessary for use is both compatible software and hardware – usually, an embedded chip.

Technipages Explains Bluetooth

Bluetooth transmits data from one device to another. Perhaps the most common application for this technology at the moment is listening to music via the use of Bluetooth headphones. The wireless connection between two Bluetooth devices is also known as a short-range, frequency hopping, ad hoc radio link. At its very base, bluetooth is a type of radio transmission – one that allows different devices to hop onto the same frequency in order to exchange data.

These connections are inequal though – it’s possible to connect up to eight devices together. One of these eight is the master device, while the other seven are the slaves. This means that the master device makes sure all slaved devices are properly synchronised. This way, for example, one phone could transmit to up to seven pairs of headphones. In personal use, it’s uncommon to have more than two or three devices connected at once. While slower than other services like WiFi, the fact that the chips are incredibly small and the software for them is highly compatible makes bluetooth great for connecting small and simple devices – such as headphones!
