How to Connect Galaxy Note 5 to TV

How to Connect Galaxy Note 5 to TV

By Mitch Bartlett 18 Comments

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 can connect to most TVs wirelessly. You just need the right equipment. Here are three different options you can use.

Option 1 – Chromecast

This option also allows you to mirror any screen on your device wirelessly.

  1. If you do not have a smart TV that supports Chromecast, you can acquire a Google Chromecast Adapter and connect it to the HDMI port on your TV.
  2. Ensure the Chromecast and Note 5 are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Install the Chromecast app on the Note 5.
  4. Follow the wizard to setup your device with your TV.
  5. Apps like Netflix and YouTube will now have a “Cast” Android Chromecast button button within the app that you can use to send the video to the Chromecast and TV. If you want to mirror everything on the device, open the Chromecast app, select “Menu” Menu Button, choose “Cast Screen / audio“, then select your Chromecast device in the list.

Option 2 – Miracast

This option allows you to mirror any screen on your device wirelessly.

  1. If you do not have a smart TV that supports Miracast, purchase one of the following items, and connect it to an available HDMI port on your TV.
    • Amazon Fire TV box or TV Stick
    • Roku 4, 3, or Streaming Stick
    • Miracast Video Adapter
    • Samsung Smart TV with Miracast support
    • Any other device that supports Miracast and connects to your TV
  2. Ensure your TV or device is setup and ready to receive video.
  3. Connect your TV to the Note 5 by swiping down the notification bar at the top of the screen and selecting “Quick Connect” > device > “Play/view content” > device name > “Video” > “Done“.

Option 3 – DLNA

This option allows devices to read files from your Note 5 wirelessly, but it does not allow mirroring.

  1. Connect your Note 5 to the same Wi-Fi network as your DLNA device (TV, computer, gaming console, etc).
  2. From the Note 5, select “Settings” > “More” > “Nearby devices“.
  3. Turn the “Nearby devices switch” to “On“.
  4. From the “Advanced” area, select “Content to share“.
  5. Check one or more of the following:
    • Videos
    • Photos
    • Music
  6. From the “Advanced” section, select “Allowed devices“
  7. Choose devices that are allowed to share media with.

Galaxy note 5 mirroring. With a smart tv. Pull down menu. Select smart view. Have to be on the same network. Smart tv must be set to ALLOW your device.

I too “upgraded ” to the note 5. It took hours of talking to tech support ( no help) and store personal (again no help) to find out the note does not have a ir emitter. As stated, even us cellular tech support does not know this. The only way to mirror is via wifi.

I wonder how much is Samsung getting paid by taking away features that worked on earlier models now I have to buy device from another company to add to my device to make the old feature to work.

Option 2 – Miracast does not require a router or traditional wifi, it does utilize wifi direct. It connects to your device directly/wirelessly. Similar to a Bluetooth connection.

Do you need wifi for Option 2: Miracast?
Is there any way to connect or mirror screen or stream movies from my Note 5 T Mobile 4g lte to my new Samsung smart tv without wifi (I don’t have wifi at my home)?

@Lois I’m afraid not. At least, there isn’t one that I’ve been able to uncover. Samsung has invested in the wireless solutions.

What a huge disappointment it is by not supporting the very convenient MHL. They went from their phones being compatible with any hdmi TV with a 5 dollar cord to now needing a special TV or a much more expensive adapter, for a wireless and undoubtedly more laggy experience. On top of the lack of sd card, IR blaster and removable battery to boot. It angers me that I still got this phone even with all these downgrades, damn you Samsung. You win this round, but in two years, you better watch out! I said the same for Verizon two years ago and just dumped them too. When the competition rivals people will leave in hordes.

    Re: Galaxy Note 5:
I do not have wifi. I use Easy Tether to access the internet. I attach my phone to the laptop and attach the laptop to my older TV (no usb ports on the tv) via hdmi. With unlimited data via Sprint, I stream Netflix, Amazon Prime and over-the-air channels.
Is there any way to eliminate the laptop portion of this setup and connect the phone directly to the TV, either with some combination cables or wirelessly?
    Thanks!

Do you need WiFi for the second option.
