Android: Change Email Ringtone Notification Sound

Android: Change Email Ringtone Notification Sound

By Mitch Bartlett 8 Comments

The notification sound my Android device was making every time I received an email message was annoying. I had to change the ringtone. Here’s how it’s done.

Gmail App

  1. Open the “Gmail” app.
  2. Select the “Menu” button located at the upper-left corner.
  3. Choose “Settings“.
  4. Select the email address associated with the account for which you want to modify notifications.
  5. Select “Manage notifications“. Some versions may say “Inbox sound & vibrate“.
  6. Tap “Mail“.
  7. Choose “Sound“.
  8. Select the desired sound.

Stock Email App

  1. Open the “Email” app.
  2. Select the “Menu” button located at the upper-left corner.
  3. Choose “Settings“.
  4. Select the email address associated with the account for which you want to modify notifications.
  5. Do any of the following:
    • Check “Email notifications” to enable notifications or uncheck it to disable all notifications.
    • Select “Choose ringtone” to change the sound that plays when an email arrives.
    • Check or uncheck “Vibrate” to enable or disable vibration when an email arrives.

FAQ

Why does nothing happen when I select “Sound” in step 7?

You are logged into the Android device as a user who doesn’t have access to change the sound. Switch over to the user that has access.

How do I turn off my notification when I open an email I don’t mind when I get notified but it’s a little silly I get notified when I open an email? How do I shut that off? Note 10+ user.
