Android: Turn Camera Flash On or Off

By Mitch Bartlett 20 Comments

Access the setting to turn the camera flash on or off on your Android device using these steps.

  1. Open the “Camera” app.
  2. Tap the flash icon. Some models may require you to select the “Menu” icon ( or ) first. You may have to tap or swipe left to make the buttons appear.
  3. Toggle the lighting icon to the desired setting.
    • Flash icon Lightning with nothing = Flash will activate on every picture.
    • Flash off icon Lightning with slash = Flash is disabled.
    • Flash Auto icon Lightning with A = Auto-detect flash.

I found the flash symbol (lightning flash) on the very top right hand corner of the screen in camera mode was greyed out and very hard to see. Tap that area anyway and the symbol should light up and show a drop down menu for flash choices. At least that’s how it worked on my Nokia 3. Hope this helps… took me about a month to guess this!

The icon mentioned had a slash through it. One touch toggled it to one with an A. .Pressing the white shutter dot, the light comes on and then the picture is taken. Not quite like a flash camera, but better than no light on my Galaxy S8.

Flash icon has a line thru it. Does not activate, and will not toggle to get to”A” to auto select…flash when needed. Grrr.
