Top Alternatives to Google Discover Feed

Top Alternatives to Google Discover Feed

Posted on August 5, 2020 by Mona Leave a Comment

Google Discover Feed is a feature of Google that provides all Google users with personalized news and other content based on their preferences and interests. The aim is to keep you up to date on all the things that interest you.

Google keeps track of your frequent searches and the sites you visit most and then suggests related content in the form of a feed. The information is presented in the way of Discover cards or topics. You can follow different feeds or topics by clicking on the three vertical dots at the footage of the topic and clicking Follow. Google will always show you content from topics that you follow.

Despite the cool features of Google Discover Feeds, not everyone likes it. It may be that it just doesn’t show the items that you want, or you don’t like the appearance. Whatever the reason, you don’t have to continue using Google Discover. Other similar services offer personalized news and content.

The Best Alternatives to Google Discover Feed

Google is not the only service that provides news and other content without the user searching for the content. Google has recently faced stiff competition from Apple, Microsoft News, AP News, Flipboard, and others.

Apple News

Apple News is a news feature provided by Apple for all its customers. The service comes pre-installed on all iPhones, iPad, and Apple laptops. The good thing is that it is also free and can be accessed from anywhere on the phone. Apple News shows content from topics that you preselected while setting up the app. You can also edit to change or add more topics of interest.

The Apple News interface is user-friendly and intuitive, offering a great combination of text, images, and videos to provide a comfortable visual experience for users. It is also ad-free, which means that users can immerse themselves in the articles of their interest without interruption. Users have the option to view news items that have been handpicked by expert news editors in the Spotlight section.

The downside to Apple News is that browsing news by specific topics aside from those that have been predefined as areas of interest is complicated. Also, when in a category, the news items that may be displayed may not be the latest.

Microsoft News

Microsoft News is a news service provided by Microsoft. It can be accessed on all mobile platforms by downloading the app, both on Android and iOS. The application offers news categories at the top of the application, where customers can browse and choose a category of their choice.

The news service can be accessed on a PC by simply opening a new tab in the Microsoft Edge browser. The My Feed section provides news items which Microsoft has selected based on your preselected interests. Under the Personalize tab, you can edit and add more to your interests from an extensive collection of news categories.

Other features include a Good News section, which shows encouraging news items such as news about survival, positivity, saved pets, love stories, etc. On the mobile version, you can also choose to view news items from around you. With your location turned on, Microsoft News will pull news items from local papers around your area and present them to you.

Microsoft News provides a dark theme, which, for me, is a plus. It is also free. Unlike Apple News, it displays ads, but not in an intrusive manner.

Associated Press (AP) News

AP News is a free news service that curates news articles from its reporters around the world and arranges them in categories for its users. Unlike Google, Apple, and Microsoft, whose primary business is not news reporting, Associated Press News is a news reporting organization like CNN. Its reporters are always out in the field in different parts of the world. Its bureaus are located in more than 160 countries.

AP News is available for both Android and iOS users and can be downloaded from their respective app stores. After installation, the user can choose to view news items that have been curated for US users. The news items are featured in English, Arabic, and Spanish. The user can select their language of choice. Also, a user can choose the international version where that features global news items.

After the initial setup, users can also click on Topics > Edit menu to access settings and edit their choice of news categories. If allowed to access the phone’s location, AP News will also show local news feeds.

AP News is a non-profit organization, and therefore its news application is free.

Wrapping Up

While Google does a great job of recommending news items based on your preferences, other news services discussed above can do even more than Google Discover Feed. Whenever you’re not happy with Google Discover, check out one of these great sources.
