Slack: How To Configure the Emoji Options

Slack: How To Configure the Emoji Options

Posted on January 22, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Emojis are a fun, quick, and easy way of communicating simple things such as an emotional reaction or what you’re doing. You can type them by typing a colon and then the emoji’s name. The message box will even suggest emoji auto-completions. This way, you don’t necessarily have to know the full emoji name. Alternatively, you can use the emoji picker in the message box to select which emoji you want to put in your message. You can also react to messages with emoji through the one-click reactions bar.

How to Change the Emoji Options on Slack

If you want to review and configure your emoji options, go into your preferences. To do so, click on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then click on “Preferences.”

Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then click on “Preferences.”

Once in your preferences, switch to the “Messages & media” tab. Scroll down to the “Emoji” section. The first checkbox, labeled “Display emoji as plain text,” prevents emoji from being rendered. Instead, it prints out their text counterpart. “Show JUMBOMOJI” configures if you want messages that are exclusively comprised of up to twenty-three emoji to show large emojis.

“Convert my typed emoticons to emoji so :D becomes 😄” is used to determine if emoticons are changed into their emoji counterparts or not. “Show one-click reactions on messages” allows you to configure if three emoji are in the reaction panel to allow you to react to a post with a single click.

Finally, directly below the one-click reaction checkbox, you can choose which three emoji you want to be included in the one-click reaction list. Click each of the three boxes to open the emoji picker, then select the emoji you want to be available.

Tip: You can see a preview of the reaction panel—the one-click reactions at the bottom of the “Emoji” section.

Configure each of the emoji options to your personal preference.

Not everyone will be a fan of how Emoji work in Slack. If you don’t like it and want to change the emoji’s appearance in Slack, this guide will help you understand your options.
