Windows: Fix “The component store has been corrupted.” Error

I was helping somebody with the installation of their new Windows Phone device and we couldn’t get the phone to install to their Windows 8¬†computer. An error appeared every time we tried that said:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.  The component store has been corrupted.

Fortunately, we were able to find a fix.

The fix for was to install the Microsoft System Readiness Tool and run it. This tool works on Windows 8, 7, Vista, Server 2012, and Server 2008. It will repair the broken parts of the registry that this error message references. Afterwards, your device should install successfully.
