iTunes: Fix iPhone or iPod Not Detected in Windows 10

August 1, 2015 by Mitch Bartlett 364 Comments Filed Under: iOS, Windows Tagged: iPhone 7, ipod touch, itunes, Windows 10, Windows 8

I recently upgraded to Microsoft Windows 10 and found that iTunes no longer detected my iPod Touch or iPhone. Here’s how I fixed it.

  1. Ensure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
  2. Open “Control Panel“.
  3. Select “Hardware and Sound“.
  4. Select “Devices and Printers“.
  5. Your iPhone or iPod should be displayed in the “Unspecified” section. Right-click it and select “Properties“.
Note: If you don’t see your device listed here, ensure you have selected to trust the PC on the device and you are using a supported cable.
  6. iPod Device Properties optionSelect the “Hardware” tab, then click the “Properties” button.
  7. Hardware Properties buttonFrom the “General” tab, select the “Change settings” button.
  8. Change settings buttonSelect the “Driver” tab, then select “Update Driver“.
  9. Update Driver optionChoose “Browse my computer for driver software“.
  10. Browse my computer for driver software optionSelect “Browse…” then navigate to “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers“. If you don’t have this folder, check in “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers“.
  11. Apple device driver locationClick “Next” > “Close“.

Your Apple device should now be detected successfully within iTunes.

FAQ

Why don’t I have the “Drivers” folder?

It is possible your installation of iTunes didn’t include it. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes and the folder should be re-created.

OMG Thank You!!!! I have spent 3 frustrating days trying to resolve this problem. I was almost ready to do a factory reset on my iPad.

I followed your step by step instructions and it worked! My iPad now recognizing my computer and my iTunes account now recognizing that I have an iPad device plugged in!

What a simple fix that should have been a simple update from Microsoft and Apple! So angry at both for not taking care of their customers!

My sincere thanks to Technipages for posting this and their help!

Wow- finally!!! I found similar instructions elsewhere, but they skipped your step 7! So when I was in the ‘Driver’ tab the ‘Update Driver’ tab was grayed out. I was stuck there. So for me the key was clicking “Change Settings” before selecting the driver tab. Seems somewhat obvious AFTER the fact, but only with benefit of hindsight. THANK YOU for complete instructions and not assuming we all know the obvious in-between details.

Many, many thanks. That worked like a charm! It sure has been frustrating! You gave concise easy instructions. What I might have missed was that I needed to have the phone connected before following all of the steps.

Very happy camper now. Thank you for alleviating stress mixed with anger. Still mad that Microsoft and Apple could not collaborate on this given the widespread use of cross platform windows systems with Apple products. Sometimes competition makes bright people idiots.

Hey! I did everything you said on this page and this one from Apple : https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT204095#AMD%20USB%20not%20listed

But when I click on Next after I selected the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers, my computer says that it has found the driver but detected a problem when installing it. I can’t figure how to fix this. Please help me guys !
