Performance is very important on any computer. Older or budget computers can struggle with low system resources and slow processors. This can cause performance issues in Windows – one way to try to reduce the performance requirements of Windows is to disable some of the graphical features that are enabled by default. This guide will cover how to disable window shadows in Windows 10.

Tip: Window shadows are the subtle graphical shadow effects around all windows. It can be most easily seen by moving one window over a bright, single-coloured background – you’ll notice a bit of a shadow.

Shadows are a complex graphical calculation to perform in any graphics software. The basic nature of window shadows in Windows 10 means that the processing power required to implement them is low. However, it can be lowered further by disabling the shadows entirely. This can free up a little bit of extra performance for the day-to-day running of your computer.

The window shadow option is located in “Performance Options”. To open Performance Options, press the Windows key, type “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” and hit enter.

Window shadows can be disabled from the “Visual Effects” tab of Performance Options.

The “Visual Effects” tab contains a number of graphical options that can be disabled to reduce the processing power required to run Windows. To disable window shadows, untick “Show shadows under windows”, then click “OK” or “Apply”. This will remove the window shadows and slightly increase the performance of Windows on your computer.
