Kindle Fire: How to Adjust Volume

By Mitch Bartlett 20 Comments

Need to know how to adjust the volume on your Amazon Kindle Fire tablet? You’re not alone. Here’s how it’s done.

5th Generation Fire

  • With the screen unlocked, press the volume up or down buttons on the top of the device.
  • You can also go to “Settings” > “Sound & Notification” and adjust the “Media Volume” or “Sound & Notification Volume” there.

Kindle Fire HDX

With the screen unlocked, press the “+” or “–” buttons on the back of the device to toggle the volume up or down.

Kindle Fire HD (2nd Generation)

Swipe the top bar down to access the volume control, then drag the slider.

Kindle Fire (Original)

You can find the option to adjust the volume by tapping the gear in the upper-right corner then tapping the Volume option. You can then increase or decrease the volume by sliding the ball on the bar right or left respectively.

Help. I have had my new kindle fire hd 10 for a week or two. i am having trouble with volume. Ex: i will watch segment on cnn app and NO volume at all. I cant raise the volume at all. Ill go to another clip and have volume, return to the first clip – no volume. Today i turned on first clip, i had volume but when i returned to it, no volume. Originally i thought it was a fluke, but it has happened too often with a new device. Help! This is my 3rd kindle device.

I have the same problem, and I can’t hear what I want and I don’t know how to turn off “Systems and Notifications” when I touch the button at the top.

Have the same problem as Kate, can’t get the Media volume control when I want it. My phone has a handy arrow next to the volume meter which, when pressed, show both volume controls and can easily be changed. Really surprised the fire doesn’t have that.

I’ve got a Fire 5th gen. When I hit the volume buttons sometimes I get “Media” and sometimes I get “System and Notifications”. How do I control it to get one or the other without going through Settings. I want Notifications at a different level from Media. I never know which I’m going to get and sometimes can’t get the one I want. Or is it really only one volume control and doesn’t matter what it says it is? Right now it claims they are at totally different levels, but I don’t really have a way of testing Notifications, do I?

I have similar prob. – The volume is too low and I can NOT change it via my earphone control.
I found the “Settings” > “Sound & Notification”> “system & notification volume control” on amazon fire 5th generation does NOT show any control – No response.

After I turn “Do Not Disturb” setting off, reboot the Fire, it works o.k. now….

And I am trying to turn “Do Not Disturb” setting back ON. – Works now.. – I hope the prob. do not come back.

I am also having problem with my sound as of a week ago! I found it is mostly using the silk browser, that is the worst! The rest is a little better but not what it used to be. Was this because of the update?

My sound was great until about a week ago then all of a sudden, I could barely hear any radio streaming. Movies via netflix are still good. But all other media is very low – radio, youtube, etc. I reset the factory settings as I found on one site to do and that took care of it for about 24 hours, now back to barely able to hear. I use to be able to sit the Kindle on the table and be across the room washing dishes or cooking and be able to hear it – no longer. It has to be no more than a foot or 2 from me. Awful. There was an update about a week ago as well so not sure if that had something to do with it!

Also, I can not get sound to work on the Pandora app, though it did at first. I have sound on Netflix. Please help.
