Morgan LangeAugust 2, 2018 Comments (8)

When trying to take pictures using the Camera app on the Apple iPhone or iPad, you may experience a problem where the app will launch to a black screen. When this happens, users are unable to take a photo and the options usually seen within the app are unavailable. There are a few steps you can take to fix this problem.

Fix 1 – Force Quit Camera

Attempt to force quit the “Camera” app, then relaunch it.

Devices without Home Button

  1. From the Home screen, swipe upward.
  2. Tap and hold the “Camera” app card.
  3. When the red icon appears next to it, swipe the card upward or tap the red icon.

Devices with Home Button

Press the “Home” button once to go back to the main screen, then double-press the “Home” button to bring up the list of running apps. Swipe the Camera app upward off the screen to close it.

Now attempt to launch the Camera app to see if it works again.

Fix 2 – Force Device Reset

Devices without Home Button

  1. Quickly press and release “Volume Up“, then quickly press and release “Volume Down“.
  2. Press and hold the “Power/Sleep” button on the side of the device until it reboots.

Devices with Home Button

Reset the iPhone or iPad by pressing and holding “Home” and “Power” simultaneously until the device restarts.

Fix 3 – Ensure you Have Enough Storage Space

Check to make sure you have enough memory to hold photos. You can check under “Settings” > “General” > “Storage” to see if you have enough space.

Hopefully one of the above processes have solved the problem with your Camera app. Please leave a comment below and tell us about your experience.
