Canon Pixma MX922: How to Scan

Canon Pixma MX922: How to Scan

December 27, 2017 by Mitch Bartlett 24 Comments

Confused about how to scan using the Canon Pixma MX922 all-in-one printer? We’ve got the steps for you.

You can use the IJ Scan Utility on your computer to scan documents from your computer. The IJ Scan Utility is installed using the disc included with your Pixma 922 or via driver download and install from the Canon website.

  1. Launch the IJ Scan Utility. Windows users can launch it from “Start” > “Programs” > “Canon Utilities” > “IJ Scan Utility” > “IJ Scan Utility“. MacOS users can select “Go” from the Finder, then select “Applications” > “Canon IJ Scan Utility“.
  2. Load the documents you wish to scan on the scan surface or in the document feed tray.
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • “Auto” – Auto detect documents on platen or document feeder and scan.
    • “Photo” – Scan photos placed on the platen.
    • “Documents” – Scan a document placed on the platen.
    • “Custom” – Scan with settings set under “Settings…”.
    • “Stitch” – Scan multiple pages and combine them together to make one image.

Files are saved in the format and folder specified in “Settings…“. Be sure to check the section that matches the selection you have chosen.

You can scan to an email message under “Settings…” by using the “Attach to e-mail” selection.

This scanner is not one bit intuitive. It sucks up ink more than any other printer I have owned and even the XL in cartridges are obscenely expensive. The scans are ok, but to be honest, I’ve gotten scans of equal quality out of a much cheaper printer/fax/scanner than this unwieldy behemoth if a desktop printer.

I’m getting rid of it as soon as I use the current ink and will likely not ever own a Canon printer again. Their cameras are great, but if this printer represents their entire printer product lineup, I’ll pass on it.

I have never had any problems with my scans. Works very well and looks very good. I don’t know if anyone is using the Canon My Image Garden but this is the way to go for your scanning. Don’t use the disc that comes with the unit. Go to the Canon website and download and install the drivers from there along with the My Image Garden.

    https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/drivers-downloads

Type in your printer model. Ex: Pixma MX922 and hit GO.
Under Drivers click on: MX920 series MP Drivers Ver.1.01 (Windows)
to see what you get and then hit DOWNLOAD.
Then go to software and click on what software you would like to use. Most would want to download each one.

Hope this helps. I love my MX922. It has little problems here and there but so do most other printers without the extras that come with this fabulous printer for the price.

I’ve had the MX922 for a couple of years now. Scanning quality is consistently terrible. I have tried everything – read every website, followed every video, read my manuals, etc., etc. I will never buy another Canon product again.

Note to those posting positive reviews – it would be nice if you let us know what your settings are I’ve tried multiple combinations to now avail. Scanning is garbage.

I should have read the reviews before I bought this printer if I had I would have definitely chosen something else. The scanning process is nothing but a pain. Something that should be so simple is way to complicated. I pulled the instructions up on line followed them more times that I care to think about, still would not scan. Wouldn’t recommend this printer if you think you may have to scan something at some point unless you have lots of time to waste.!!!!

Wow! 16 comments and they are all negative.
I bought a TR8500 last Friday and spent hours trying to get it to work. Today I replaced it with an old standby my second MX922. I love it! it set up in an hour instead of days, works just fine. I great office tool in my opinion.

A neighbor just had their MX922 lock up on them. The B200 “Anything on the planet” Error. Guess they do that. So since they had just bought a ton of ink, I got an MX922, at an obscene price, to replace an Epson WF-3620 that had amazing scanning software and scanner. But their print heads gunk up easily. So is this 922 software bad because the printer is bad and old and Canon didn’t bother to update their (scanning) software or make it universal like Epson so it glides with all releases? Anyone have any third party that they have used other than VueScan that you might recommend?

Well I guess I really can’t complain $39 for the printer and tons of third party ink that cost me nothing and cheap ink in the future until this thing goes B200. Guess I’ll have to breakout my old $5K Lino-Hell scanner, which I haven’t needed since the Epson basically did it all. That’ll be a rich trying to get that back up on running.

Guess that’s what I get for being cheap.

    P.S.
    I REALLY HATE THIS PRINTER!!!

I just bought the MX922 yesterday to replace a dead IP4300. I’ve got it mostly working after hours with it..
The scan does not work. Scan gear says ‘Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:
    Scanner is turned off
    USB cable is disconnected.
    Please check and try again.
Of course the MX922 is turned on and the scan lamp comes on.
USB cable disconnected. Give me a break. The printer was set up for USB operation and prints from my PC with Win10.
I am still searching for a fix. Have not talked to Canon yet, but that is probably the route I will ned to take. I have spent at least 6 hours on this thing. I did not expect it to be a full time job.
My IP4300, now dead, and Pixima Pro 100 never gave me these hassles.

Wasted 3 hours now, trying to scan an 18 page document with my Canon PIXMA TS9120 and save it as one file, whether it be in Canon’s “My Image Garden”, using “StitchFix” or Adobe Reader. StitchFix can’t do more than 2 pages. Worst software ever. April 2018. The quality of the scanner is good, however.

Everyone said Canon is so great. I hit one button on my HP and it scans a PDF file beautifully. So far Ive wasted an hour off my time and gotten nothing but frustration. Canon has a long way to go and I am so sorry I bought this piece of ______. Wish I could send it back but I’ve had it over a month and am stuck with it. What a waste of time and money.

I am having a hard time scanning from my MX922 CANON printer. I have followed all the directions, but still nothing works. Ready to through this printer in the garbage. Using it is an act of frustration. This printer is only a few months old. Very disappointed with it.

I just purchased this Pixma Mx922 and this was not easy. I am very technologically savvy and this process has been a headache, to say the least. First I did not realize there were 2 paper trays, now I can not get the printer to print or scan under the wireless LAN. If this keeps up, I will be sending this printer back for a refund.

My problem is the same as Beths above plus I want to scan to email and the OK but is not working it shows in the colour blue not white as usual

Image Garden is just turned on by default to view the scans. You can turn it off, but it lets you QA your scans before you take away the source.

In email or an application where you want to insert the scans, browse to the folder where the files are.Thre is a default or you set your directory in preferences. I set mine for OneDrive.

If you are in Win 10, then you may have other issues. Canon released some Win10 drivers in November and December, but not remote scanning. Canon fixed all of the MX922 drivers in mid-January so everything works now, including wireless scanning.

I have been using my Canon MX922 to scan documents and then send them as email attachments. All of a sudden my documents are ending up in the image garden and there is no way I can see to get it to an email. The only options are to print or delete.

We are trying to scan a document but the pages, which are fed right side up and all facing the same way are received via email randomly upside down, sideways, and right side up. We are using simplex. Please advise.
