Bitwarden: How to Copy the Username and Password of an Entry

Posted on April 13, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Having a password manager securely stores your credentials for you can be great for giving you peace of mind. Doing so makes it a lot easier to follow security best practices and use unique, long, and complex passwords for each service. Autofill is a fantastic feature offered by many password managers, including Bitwarden. To make use of Bitwarden’s autofill feature, you need to use the Bitwarden browser extension and be auto-filling a form in the browser.

Unfortunately, you can’t use auto-fill in external apps. For example, if you want to sign into an app such as OneDrive, Steam, or even the desktop Bitwarden app. While you could look up and manually type in your saved credentials, it’s easier if you copy and paste them instead. Thankfully, Bitwarden offers quick buttons to copy the username and password, respectively, to save that little bit of extra time.

How to Copy the Username and Password of an Entry via the Browser Extension

To copy the username and password from an entry, you first need to open the Bitwarden browser extension pane. To do so, click on the Bitwarden extension icon. In any entry that you can see listed, a set of four icons will be visible on the right-hand side. The middle two allow you to copy the username and the password, respectively.

Tip: If you’re copying the username and password to paste into a website, as soon as you interact with the website or switch tabs, the extension pane will close. If you click out of the browser window into another application, the extension pane will remain open.

Open the browser extension pane, then click on the middle two icons alongside any entry to copy the username and password.

How to Copy the Username and Password of an Entry via the Web Vault

In the default “My vault” Bitwarden tab, find the entry you want to copy the credentials for. On the right-hand side of the entry, click on the cogwheel icon. Click the top two entries in the dropdown list, labeled “Copy username” and “Copy password.” Doing so will copy the values to your clipboard.

Click on the cogwheel icon on the right-hand side of an entry in the default “My vault” tab, then click on the “Copy username” and “Copy password” options in the dropdown menu.

Auto-fill is an amazing time-saving and convenient feature, but it doesn’t work outside of the browser. The copy options allow you to quickly copy your credentials to the clipboard without opening the full entry. By following the steps in this guide, you can use the ‘copy username’ and ‘copy password’ buttons.
