iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad Video Has No Sound

A common problem Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users seem to be coming across is that when they play a video, no sound is played. Here are a few things that could be causing the issue.

  • Ensure the volume/ringer is turned all the way up. Some users have had to open the iPod or YouTube app, play a song/video, turn the volume up, then play the video again to get it to work.
  • Ensure that your finger is not accidentally covering the microphone hole while you are recording the video.
  • Check the speaker and microphone to make sure it isn’t blocked with lint or other foreign object. A needle seems to work for cleaning them out. (see comments)

I tried all of these too but they didn’t work for me so I read a few other tips on other sites. I found one that talked about rebooting your iphone by holding down the button that locks/turns off the screen on the top of your phone. Hold it down until the phone shows a red slider to turn the phone off. Turn it off and wait for a minute and turn it back on. I did that and then I tried recording a video and the sound finally worked! Hope it works for you too.

  3. Dustin says

Try using condensed air and blow out the charging port. The phone thinks its plugged in and stops the sound.

Thank you so much – tried cleaning (very very carefully) the tiny little mike hole with a pin and …… PROBLEM SOLVED. Brilliant! Video playback now loud and clear.

I had the same problem with no audio on videos I had taken with my iPhone 4S and no audio for playing music. I resolved it by opening a song in music then sliding the slider bar on the bottom of the page completely to the right. I have no idea how that got changed. Ohhhhh, I let my nine year old play games on my phone yesterday and I don’t like to listen to the “music”. She had no headphones so she must have muted it that way. Hope this helps someone?

    No sound on video rec

Double tap on the iphone button.
Now a list of all kind of apps Will show up in the lower area of your screen, these apps are programs WHO is left open from earlier usage of the iphone. Simply hold down one of these apps (like u always do when you want to remove a app from your iphone). And erase all these programs. Sometimes there are programs on that disturbs the video rec function on your iphone.

Hope this helps someone to Solve there problem, it solved My wifes iphone!

  15. Sadie says

I had the same problem and tried many of the suggestions, but none worked for me. I finally took off my iphone cover and did a test video and then the recorded video volume was fine. Maybe try removing your cover and see if that works. I guess I have to find a new, less obtrusive case. Hope this helps someone else!

I tried the “go to YouTube and play video there, turn up the volume, and then go back to your camera roll to play video” solution… and it worked like a charm. Thanks!

  17. Asaadinho says

Hello, For those who have problem with camera recordings (no sound) just use a needle and try to clean your iphone top Mic, -don’t force it to not destroy it-
    does it works?
    the answer is Yes.

  18. Jordan says

    Alright, I cracked it.
Go to your IPod on your iPhone. If your volume is all the way down on that, then that is the reason your video has absolutely no sound, only static noise. All you do, turn it all the way up. Go back to your videos and every video should have sound now. That’s it :D

Was having the same issue (no sound from recorded video, but voice memos worked fine). Ringer thing didn’t work, so I went to my iPod an realized I had used AirPlay, so my speakers were technically connected to my airport express, and since they were turned off, I got no sound. Just change it back by playing some music, tapping the AirPlay icon, and switch it back to iPhone and you should be good to go!

  20. Kerry says

I have the same problem and no one can help me as I am 2 weeks over my warranty. I have to adnmit if it is a fault they are aware with as it is a hardware fault they should replace or repair the handset free of charge instead of the ridiculous amounts they have just quoted me. Must be a good lawyer that could do something??!! well let me know if you find a solution.

  21. Kat says

Make sure that your settings (volume) for ipod are on high, this worked for me… if you cant hear your music in ipod mode then you wont hear it on video. I turned up the volume and now working.

  22. Dennis says

Same issue here. Tried everything listed below and still no help. No video sound and no iphonespeaker sound. Any other ideas? Just installed latest update too. Still no fix.

  23. Eric says

  24. Lefty says

I have an iphone 4 and when i try to record video i get no sound but when i use the memo recorder the sound works perfectly. any ideas?

  25. Jan says

I’m a new Iphone user, and the volume playback was always so low I could barely hear it. It was an easy fix…. I was accidentally holding my finger on the top of the mic when I was recording. Moved my hand and problem solved! Duh!

  26. Sabrina says

The safety pin worked for me too. I have had barely any sound on that thing (when recording videos) for months. I am so glad I read that piece of advice. I never would have thought of it :)

  27. Wojtek says

Have you solve the problem with no sound while incoming call’s ??

i’ve did everything … soft – hard rebooting
and i still have the problem …
    HELP !

  28. Jan says

my video sound did not record, but when I went to my youtube icon and turned up the volume… it worked!!!

  29. Nargis says

Hey my video sound playback was so low until i poked a safety pin into the mike and my video playback was excellent! tq Nik, u rock!

  30. Bagukiri says

If you have having problems with no audio on video you recorded. Check the volume setting on a YouTube video. If it’s muted, increase the volume here and try playing the video again from Camera Roll.

  31. Nik says

I think I have cracked this, Just took a safety pin and pocked it into the Mic (next to the phone jack on top of the phone) and that cleared the dirt. Tried the video now and all fine. wiffee is happy now. hope it works for you.

  32. Jay says

Mine is doing the same. Tried changing sound settings and restarting. Tried restoring. No luck. Anyone have any other suggestions?!?!?!

  33. chris says

no luck for me! i tried everything. Rebooting it, switching the vibrate to ringer, nothing. Only a lot of fuzziness like background noise.
