When using a computer there are some peripherals that are just necessary. For example, without a screen, keyboard, or mouse, you’re going to have a hard time using your computer. Sound is a little different though, while it isn’t required it can make things better. For example, with some speakers you can listen to music while you work, you can hear the audio from videos you play, and you can have better situational awareness in video games.

There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers on the market and being able to connect wirelessly can be convenient. However, if you have a desktop computer, or pretty much always use your laptop in the same place, having some wired speakers can be more convenient. The biggest advantage is that there is no audio delay, it also simplifies troubleshooting and connecting.

There are plenty of things you may want from a set of speakers. you may just want a simple stereo pair, you may want something that stands out from the crowd, or want some pounding bass. It’s impossible to recommend any one set of speakers for everyone as needs, tastes, and budgets will vary wildly. To help you find the best set of cabled speakers for your computer, we’ve drawn up our list of the best wired computer speakers in 2022.

Key Features

  • Subtle black colour scheme
  • Tall and slim speakers
  • Can be connected to three devices at once

Specifications

  • Connectivity: Aux and Bluetooth
  • Drivers: 2x 2.5-inch (driven) and 2x 2.5-inch (passive)
  • Channels: 2.0

The Logitech Z207 is a stereo pair of budget-friendly speakers that come in a subtle black style that will fit with basically anything. They’re tall and slim in format, which makes them relatively easy to fit on a desk but potentially an issue if you want to place them under your monitor. The speakers are angled slightly to aim the sound they produce better at you when sitting at a desk.

The speakers offer an aux-in for wired sound and Bluetooth, meaning you can pair your phone or another device you use at your desk to them too. If you want to switch to headphones it’s easy thanks to the headphone out jack on the front of one of the speakers. While it may look like each speaker has two drivers, the second driver is only passively driven.

Pros
  • Angled slightly to direct the sound towards your ears
  • A headphone jack on the speaker
  • Budget pricing
Cons
  • Despite the appearance of two drivers per satellite, one is a passive radiator
  • Two sets of cables
  • No way to adjust bass levels

Key Features

  • It comes with a subwoofer
  • Desktop control pod
  • 30W RMS, 62W peak

Specifications

  • Connectivity: Aux
  • Drivers: 4x 2-inch drivers, 1x 5.25-inch driver
  • Channels: 2.1

The Cyber Acoustics CA-3610 is a budget-friendly 2.1 speaker system. not only do you get a pair of stereo speakers but a subwoofer too. It’s not the biggest or the most powerful but will provide better bass than a standard stereo pair can produce. It also comes with a small control pod that you can place on your desk to change the volume, change the bass volume, and even add extra inputs.

While the control hub sounds pretty useful it has some downsides. For one, it’s hardwired to the subwoofer, making it difficult to run the cable through tight spaces and grommets. The wires are also a little short, which may limit your ability to place the speakers where you want them, The speakers may also catch dirt easily as they have a glossy finish.

Pros
  • Downward firing sub
  • Separate bass volume slider
  • Headphone jack
Cons
  • The control hub is hard-wired into the sub
  • Wires are short
  • Glossy finish

Key Features

  • Unique transparent design
  • Touch controls
  • Similarly designed predecessor was featured in a museum of modern art

Specifications

  • Stereo + Subwoofer (2.1)
  • 3.5mm jack
  • Watts: 40

The Harman Kardon SoundSticks III is a 2.1 speaker and subwoofer system with a unique transparent industrial design. This design follows in the footsteps of the previous model that was featured at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, making it an attention-grabbing showpiece. Unfortunately, this transparent design does make it very vulnerable to scratches, marks, dust, and other dirt.

Touch controls make it easy to adjust the volume, however, they’re located on the subwoofer which may make them more difficult to get to than if they were on a speaker. You can adjust the angle of the speakers to fit your seating position. One potential downside if you tend to use your computer in a dark environment is that the subwoofer has an always-on LED.

Pros
  • The angle of the satellites can be adjusted
  • 6-inch subwoofer
Cons
  • Always on LED in the subwoofer
  • Vulnerable to scratches and marks

Key Features

  • THX certified
  • Large 8-inch subwoofer
  • 200W RMS

Specifications

  • Connectivity: optical, coaxial, line in, Aux
  • Drivers: 2x 2.75-inch drivers, 1x 8-inch driver
  • Channels: 2.1

The Edifier M3600D is a 2.1 THX-certified speaker and subwoofer set that speaks to the high-quality sound that it can produce. The core of the system is the 8-inch subwoofer, which comes with two 2.75-inch satellites for a combined 200W RMS. The styling of the subwoofer may not appeal to everyone. The extra-large grille on the side is very obvious and not everyone will appreciate it.

One of the things that may put you off is that the vast majority of the price is for the subwoofer. While this makes sense as it is bigger and more powerful than the satellites, the satellite speakers are available as a lone pair, for just $30. While they’re good, it feels like they could be better. A number of users have reported quality control issues, however, by all accounts, the customer service provided by Edifier is excellent, with the 2-year warranty being reliably honoured, and replacements being shipped in good time.

Pros
  • Solid 2-year warranty
  • Excellent sound quality
Cons
  • Expensive subwoofer upgrade
  • Some potential QC issues
  • Bulky subwoofer cover
