Google Duo: How to Prevent People from Being Able to Use Your Email Address to Contact You

January 16, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Privacy is an important part of your life, both online and in real-life scenarios. Privacy helps to keep your work life separate from your personal life. It keeps strangers and acquaintances from knowing personal details about you that you don’t want them to know. Part of managing your privacy is choosing to restrict access to certain information. One of the most important ways of controlling this is managing how people can contact you.

For example, many social media sites allow you to provide a range of contact details, such as your email address and phone number. Often, you don’t want them to use them to contact you with notifications or product offers; you just want to use them to secure your account or make them visible to your friends. Thankfully, sites that ask for this data generally give you control over how they use it, giving you some peace of mind.

Google Duo is a webphone service linked to your Google account. As with all phone services, your phone number is the primary communication method and communication on the platform. Because it is a Google service, though, it also has access to your email address. By default, anyone who knows your email address can look you up and contact you on Google Duo. This essentially allows anyone with your email address to phone you, even if you have no idea who they are.

How to Prevent People from Calling You on Google Dup

To change this setting and prevent people from searching for and contacting you by your email address in Google Duo, you need to open the Google Duo settings. Click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner of the web application.

Click the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner of the web application to open the settings.

Once in the settings, click to expand the “Account” section. Then click the “People can contact you using your email address” slider to the “Off” position.

In the “Account” settings, click the “People can contact you using your email address” slider to the “Off” position.

You’ll be required to confirm that you’ll “be removed from all groups that use your email address.” If this is an issue, you will have to keep the setting enabled. Or, change your details in the affected groups to use your phone number. If you’re not part of any groups because of your email address or are not concerned about losing access to those groups, click “Turn off” to disable the setting.

Click “Turn off” if you’re ok with being removed from any groups that use your email address.
