Zoom Personal ID: What You Need to Know

Zoom Personal ID: What You Need to Know

Posted on September 7, 2021 by Judy Sanhz Leave a Comment

If you work from home, you’ve surely had to know various video conferencing apps such as Zoom. Zoom has various features that make it one of the most used apps for video conferencing. For example, to meet with co-workers, friends, and family, Zoom provides you with a Personal meeting ID.

This feature makes meeting with those you connect with often much easier. By having your PMI, they can connect more easily since it doesn’t change like a regular Zoom ID. If you’re a licensed Zoom user, you even have the option of changing it, while that option is not available to free accounts.

How to Change Your Zoom PMI

You can tell the difference between your PMI and the Zoom ID by the number of numbers it has. PMI will have 13, while the regular Zoom ID will have 11. Free accounts will have their own PMI, but the difference with the paid account is that paid accounts can change it while free accounts can’t.

To change your PMI, you’ll need to go to Zoom’s official site. Once you’re signed in, click on your profile picture to go to your profile settings. Scroll down, and under the meeting section, you’ll see your current PMI. Click on the blue edit option to the right, and the window to make the necessary changes will appear. Erase your current code and type in the new one.

Change Zoom PMI

Don’t forget to click on the Save button when you’re done. The next time you want to start a meeting with your new OMI, click on the dropdown menu beside where it says New Meeting. Place the cursor on the PMI, and you’ll see options such as:

  • Copy ID
  • Copy invitation
  • PMI Settings

Restriction to Keep in Mind When Changing Your PMI

If you do decide to change your PMI, there are some things to keep in mind. For example, the number can’t start with a one or zero. Zoom will only accept numbers from two to nine. You can’t use prefixes such as:

  • 800
  • 400
  • 888
  • 887
  • 877
  • 866
  • 855
  • 850
  • 803
  • 804
  • 807
  • 808
  • 809
  • 660
  • 508
  • 900
  • 200
  • 300
  • 500
  • 600
  • 700

Also, you can’t repeat three-digit groups such as 247 247 247 or 555 888 777. The same number is not allowed to make up the entire eight digits, and you can’t have the same number five times straight. Then there’s the obvious that you can’t use meeting IDs that are already in use.

How to Keep Your Zoom PMI Meeting Safe

PMI is very convenient, but it can also have a risk. If you shared the link with people you don’t trust and gave them the link just because they were a friend of a friend, you run the risk of that person sharing it. After that, anyone with the link can join your meeting unless you change it.

One security measure you can take is to lock the Zoom meeting once you’ve seen everyone you’ve invited is connected. To lock your Zoom meeting, you’ll need to click on the Security icon at the bottom, and when the options window appears, choose the lock option. You’ll also see the option to enable the waiting room.

Lock Zoom Meeting

By locking your Zoom meeting, you don’t have to worry about any unwanted visitors. You can also use Zoom ID, where the meeting ID and code are only good for that one meeting. This is ideal for meetings when you don’t know everyone that’s going to connect.

Remember to use your PMI at least once a year, or else it’s going to expire.

How to Disable the Personal Meeting ID in Zoom

If you know you’re not going to use it and want to disable it, you can do so in Settings from Zoom’s official site. Once you’ve signed in, you’ll need to go to Account Management and then to Account Settings. Under the Meeting Passcode section, you’ll see the option to enable or disable the option. You can lock this so no one else makes any changes.

Turn off PMI Zoom

It’s also possible to disable the PMI setting for a group of users. You can do this by signing into Zoom’s site, but you’ll need to do this as an admin that can edit. You can make the change by going to:

  • Zoom site
  • Navigation panel
  • User Management
  • Group Management
  • Click on the group name
  • Settings tab

Remember that if you want to make this a general rule for all the users on your account, you have the option of locking your account. Something you might want to try is changing it your phone number. That way, it’s easier to remember.

Conclusion

To change the PMI, you need to sign into Zoom’s site since you won’t be able to change it from the app. Remember to use it at least once a year so it won’t expire and to lock your meeting or enable the waiting room for more security.
