What Are WVX Files?

What Are WVX Files?

Posted on January 2, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

WVX is a file extension used by Windows Media Player as a re-director, it contains a playlist of file locations of audio or video tracks to play. WVX stands for Windows Media Video Redirector. A WVX file doesn’t include any audio-visual data itself, it just includes a file path to the audio or video file, the file paths are links to remote URLs. When opened with a media player that can interpret them, WVX files will queue their contained playlist as if they had been queued manually.

How can you open WVX files?

Some but not all media player programs can play WVX files by opening them from within the player. An Internet connection is required as the audio or video file will need to be streamed while playing. It is possible that URLs linked in any WVX file, and especially in older ones have since broken.

What programs work with WVX files?

WVX files can be opened with Windows Media Player, VLC and GOM Media player. WVX files are in a plaintext format similar to XML and can, therefore, be edited by hand in any text editor such as Notepad or Sublime Text.
