Windows 10: Disable Location Services

Posted on April 30, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

One of the many features Windows 10 supports is location services. Location services can be used to provide local details for your device such as local weather forecasts or nearby restaurants. Location services can even be used to help find your device if you lose it. But a number of people find having their location tracked invasive.

While these features can be of value for laptops, it’s unlikely that anyone will ever need to track the location of their desktop computer – they tend to not move much. This guide will cover how to disable location services completely (on any type of Windows 10 computer).

To open the Settings app to the right page, press the Windows key, type “Location privacy settings” and hit enter. The topmost setting is “Allow access to location on this device”, click “Change” to open a small popup window. This popup window has a single slider labelled “Location access for this device”. Toggle the slider to “Off”.

Toggle the slider to “Off”, after clicking “Change”, at the top of the location privacy settings.

To confirm that location services are now disabled, click out of the popup window. The text above the box should now say “Location for this device is off”.

If the text says, “Location for this device is off”, then location services are disabled.
