Preventing something bad from happening is always better than having to deal with the consequences. If you don’t take the necessary security measures, you risk having someone steal your WhatsApp account. If that happens, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to get it back.
There are precautions you can take to prevent someone from stealing your account. You’ll need to make some security changes, but these medications could make the difference in keeping your WhatsApp account safe. Also, we’ll see what you can do if your Android device is stolen so your WhatsApp account stays safe.
WhatsApp Security Measures
But what can you do to prevent your WhatsApp account from being stolen? There are various WhatsApp security measures you can take to keep your account safe. Never share the verification code with anyone; you never know if they shared it or someone spied their phone and got it.
If you’re noticing that someone is sending or responding to messages for you, maybe you left a WhatsApp web session open and forgot to close it. Remember that the WhatsApp layout has changed, and to remove any linked devices, you need to tap on the dots at the top right and select the Linked Devices option.
Any linked devices will be listed below. Tap on the device to see the Log out option.
What to Do If Your WhatsApp Account Is Stolen
Let’s say someone stole your phone; what you can do is block your SIM card. By doing this, it won’t be possible to verify an account on that device again. This will only work if the thief doesn’t try to access your WhatsApp account through WiFi. You have the choice of using a duplicate SIM card with the same number to activate your WhatsApp account on your new device. WhatsApp can only work on one device with one phone number.
Next, you’ll need to email WhatsApp letting them know your phone is stolen; that way, if they try to use your account using WiFi, they won’t be able to. Make sure to add the phrase Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account in the topic of the email and repeat in the body of the email. Don’t forget to add the full international phone number, for example, +1 3101234567.
Remove any leading zeros and any special calling codes. If you live in Argentina, make sure the phone number will need to have a 9 between the country code and the area code. So, the phone number is going to look like this: +54 9 261 3725569. Phone numbers in Mexico will also need a 1 after the +52, and that includes Nextel numbers.
What Happens with Your Account When You Report Your Device Stolen?
Don’t worry; your WhatsApp account is not removed from the face of the earth. Your contacts can still view your profile, and you can still receive messages. These messages can stay pending for a maximum time of 30 days. So your contacts will only see one checkmark.
If you can regain access to your WhatsApp account before it is erased, you’ll get all your pending messages. You’ll also continue to be in all your groups unless you told your friends to remove you. Remember, you only have 30 days to activate your WhatsApp account.
Some things end up happening regardless of the security measures you take. Still, by doing all you can, you can reduce the probability of it happening. Maybe by making it harder for your account to be accessed, the thief will give up on it. How do you keep your WhatsApp account safe?
