In order to delete a contact in WhatsApp, you need to have a chat open with them. If you do, great – if you don’t, use the start chat button in order to start a conversation – don’t worry, you do NOT have to send any messages.
On Android, the start chat option is the green bubble in the bottom right corner of your overview screen. On an iOS device, it’s the button in the top right corner. Open a chat with the contact in question, then tap on their name at the top of the screen.
The way to delete contacts on your phone depends on your operating system.
In order to delete a contact on your Android phone, you need to use the three-dot menu in the top right corner and select the View in Address book option.

Your phone will switch to your Contacts app. Tap the three dots in the top right again, then select Delete.

Tip: If you just delete a contact from your Contacts app directly, it will also disappear from WhatsApp. Regardless of how you delete the contact, the chat will stay in your list of chats until you Delete it. To do so, go to your list of chats, tap and hold the chat in question and wait for the trashcan app to show up at the top. Confirm you want to delete your chat again, and you’re good to go!

On iOS, tap the top right corner Edit button after you’ve tapped the contact’s name. Scroll all the way down to find the Delete Contact option. Tap it, confirm your selection and your contact will be gone.

Tip: If you also want to delete your chat itself, you can do that by simply tapping on the chat in the list, then the name at the top. Scroll all the way down and select Clear chat.
