Groups on WhatsApp are a great way to share information with and chat with multiple people at once… but between spam and groups outliving their usefulness, you may find yourself wanting to leave a group or delete it – here is how you can do that.
Open your app and navigate to the group in question. Tap on the name of the group at the very top and scroll to the bottom of the options there. You’ll see an option labelled Exit Group.
Tapping on it and confirming will mean that you leave the group. You can still be invited back later.
If you want to delete a group from your chats entirely, you can do that too – after you have exited, you can delete the group from your chat history. Go back into the chat itself, tap the name at the top, then scroll down to Delete group and confirm it.
Tip: If you want to delete a group entirely, so that nobody can participate anymore, rather than just you leaving, you can’t – not unless you are the group administrator or the creator of the group. If you are a normal user, you can only leave – the other members can still participate.
For group administrators:
If you want to delete a group completely, you have to manually remove all members before you can. Admins can remove members by clicking on the group name at the top, then tapping each member and selecting the Remove option there.
Once everyone (except you) is gone, you can exit the group yourself, and then repeat the steps above to delete the group. Be aware that the other members will still have copies of the chat history unless they choose to delete them locally as well.
