What to Do When the Sound is Not Working – Windows

Posted on February 6, 2022 by Judy Sanhz Leave a Comment

Your Windows computer can give you all sorts of problems, and that includes sound issues. This can be a huge problem, especially if you need to do something important on your computer. You can try various tips to get the sound back on your computer; let’s check them out.

How to Fix Sound Not Working on Windows

To get the sound back on your Windows computer, let’s start with the basic fixes. For example, make sure that all the cables are plugged in correctly. Maybe someone moved something by accident and caused this issue. Also, make sure that the volume is turned up.

Maybe you turned it down for a reason and forgot you did that. If your computer recently went through an update, make sure to reboot your computer. Having your audio drivers updated are also very important. Or, you can also try uninstalling them and installing them again.

Check Volume Mixer

To see that the volume here is not mute, right-click on the sound icon and click on the Sound Mixer option. If it is, click on the blue volume arrows and move them upwards. Also, if you see a red circle with a line across it, that could explain why you’re not getting any audio. Click on the red circle so you can see a speaker icon with sound waves coming out of it.

Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter

Something else you can try is running the Windows Audio Troubleshooter. You can do this by going to the search box and typing the words audio troubleshooter. Once it’s open, click on Find and fix audio playback problems. Click on the Next button at the bottom, and wait until the scan is done.

It’ll ask you to choose what you want to troubleshoot. Choose an option and click on the Next button. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Check the Audio Output

The reason why you’re not getting any audio could be because Windows is playing the sound through the wrong device. To see all the devices connected to your Windows computer, right-click on the sound icon and go to Open Sound Settings. Under the Output section, click on the dropdown menu to choose your output device.

Check If Windows Audio Services is Running

If Services was turned off for some reason, that explains why you’re not getting any audio. To see if it’s running, type Services in the search bar. Scroll down and click on the Windows Audio option when the new window appears. In the second window, you should see the status of the service. It should say Running. The Startup type should also be set to Automatic.

Restart Windows Audio services

Update the Audio Drivers

To update your drivers, press the Windows and R keys and enter devmgmt.msc. Click on Sound, video, and game controllers dropdown menu, which should be near the bottom. Right-click on it and choose the option to update the drivers.

Update Windows Drivers

In the next window, you’ll need to decide how to search for the drivers. You can search manually for the drivers or browse through the computer drivers. As long as you’re there, you have other options to choose from.

Check for Updates

Have you tried everything, and nothing has changed? Maybe it’s time to install that update that has been waiting. To check for any system updates, you’ll need to click on the Windows Start menu and go to Settings. You should see the Windows update option at the top right.

Check for Windows Update

After you click on the Windows Update option, you’d see if your Windows computer is up to date or not. If you want to double-check to see if there’s an update waiting, you can always check to see if there is one waiting.

Conclusion

There can be many things that can cause your computer’s audio to fail. Hopefully, the fix was not hard to find, and it wasn’t anything too complicated. It’s always good to start with the basic fixes before getting into anything more complex. How long has the audio on your computer been failing?
