What Is Defragmenting and How Does It Help Your Computer

You’re always looking for ways to keep your computer’s performance at its best. You do your research to see what process to see what procedure can help your computer run faster, and one of those processes is defragging.

It’s a process that’s going to help your computer run faster, and that means you’ll get things done more quickly. You’ll notice how your computer won’t lag and that it’s something even beginners can do.

What is Degfragging?

What defragging does, is that it puts together parts of a file that have been placed in separate areas of the drive. This is the reason why it takes longer for a file to open. When you defragment a file, the parts of the files are put next to each other, and that way, your computer finds the entire file faster.

When is Defragmenting Necessary?

Mechanical drives will appreciate a good defrag. Why? Since these mechanical hard drives with parts that have to pull their physical weight to read your file, have to move all over the place to show you your file, you end up experiencing performance issues.

If you have older hardware (HDD) that’s very fragmented, the defragmenting will help speed things up. With an SSD, there’s no need for defragging since they are faster drives. You really won’t see much of a difference in performance.

If your computer is running on an SSD, you can end up hurting your computer since defragging will damage it.

Before You Defrag

Since the defrag process can take quite some time, you should remove any data you consider useless. This is going to make the processing time not last as long. Take a look at the programs you have on your computer and uninstall any that you don’t use anymore.

How often you defrag your computer will depend on how many files you delete and download. If this is something that you do a lot, then defragging will need to be done more frequently. But, if you give your computer a regular use, then defragging once a month is fine.

Conclusion

If you have a modern computer, there’s no need to defrag your computer since it’s going to be running on an SSD. But, if your computer is a little older and it has an HDD, then defragging it at least once a month is a good idea.

You’ll notice how your computer doesn’t take as long to open a file, and you save some valuable time. How often do you think you’re going to defrag your computer? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
