How to Update the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

By Andrew Myrick Leave a Comment

When you look at the specs of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 from Samsung, there’s no reason to believe that this device won’t be suitable for years to come. Couple that with the recent promises for longer software updates, and the Z Fold 2 is likely to be a worthy investment until the rest of the smartphone market catches up.

It’s no secret that Samsung only rivals Apple when it comes to providing some of the best hardware on a smartphone. But in recent years, software updates have also improved the overall experience, even with the sheer amount of additional features that Samsung throws in.

Nonetheless, software updates are going to be how Samsung keeps its flagship powerhouse devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Note 20 Ultra on the top of the charts. For years, the company was one of the worst when it came to providing even the smallest of software updates. Samsung has turned that corner, seemingly for good, and is now pushing monthly security updates.

How to update the Galaxy Z Fold 2

Before updating your Galaxy Z Fold 2, there are a couple of pre-requisites that have to be met first:

  • The battery level is at least 40% if not charging.
  • A battery level of at least 20% if charging.

Out of the box, you may find that a notification pops up after the phone is set up, prompting you to install the latest software update. However, if you don’t have that first notification and want to check for an update yourself, here’s how to do it.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Z Fold 2.
  2. Scroll down and tap System Updates.
  3. Tap Check for system updates at the top.
  4. If an update is available, tap Download.
  5. Once the update has downloaded, tap the Install Now button.

You can also set up your Galaxy Z Fold 2 to update automatically, and even in a specific time frame. This way, you won’t have to worry about your phone being rendered useless in the middle of the day if an important update arrives. Here’s how you can schedule automatic security updates to be installed:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Z Fold 2.
  2. Scroll down and tap System Updates.
  3. Tap Automatic security updates.
  4. Make sure the toggle at the top is turned to the On position.
  5. Under Preferred time, tap the dropdown box.
  6. Select a time frame that is suitable for you.

From there, any arriving updates are automatically installed during the set time frame. This only works for security updates though. As full-featured software updates (i.e. the upcoming update to Android 11) will require you to manually accept the update.
