VPNs are a key tool in keeping your browsing activity private from your ISP and in keeping you secure from hackers when using unencrypted public Wi-Fi networks – especially on your phone. As such you really want this protection in place all the time.
Free VPNs are easy to find, but what you need is a good one that is trustworthy. Many free VPNs don’t encrypt your data or sell your browsing data to advertisers, entirely defeating the purpose of using a VPN in the first place. Below is the lone trustworthy unlimited free VPN, along with a couple of other free and trustworthy VPNs that offer a lot of data (though not an unlimited amount) and that can be used on your iPhone.
ProtonVPN is the only trustworthy and genuinely unlimited free VPN available. The free tier doesn’t have the best speeds, only offers servers in three countries, and doesn’t support torrenting or streaming. It does, however, offer unlimited data, the strongest available encryption, and no ads or logging even for free users – a valuable set of features for iPhone VPN users.
The servers available to free tier users are located in the US, the Netherlands, and Japan. The privacy organisation that runs ProtonVPN has a proven privacy and security track record and is based in Switzerland and so is protected by the fairly strong Swiss privacy laws.
Paid plans are also available but completely optional and start from $3.29 a month for a 2-year plan.
Hide.me offers a free tier VPN with a generous 10GB a month of data. While 10GB a month isn’t the same as unlimited data, it’s a lot more than most VPN providers offer. Five of its more than 1700 servers are accessible to free tier users. The servers also support P2P torrenting and streaming although access to Netflix is blocked.
While there is a monthly data cap, there are no artificial limits on your download speed, you can use the VPN servers at the same speed paid users would get, and so surf pretty well on your iOS device.
Paid plans are also available and start from $4.99 a month for a 2-year plan.
Windscribe offers 2GB of free data a month, while only requiring a username. If you signup with and confirm an email address, your free allowance is raised to 10GB a month. It also offers a “Tweet-4-Data” scheme, where you can tweet at them and get an extra 5GB of free data a month. In total, you can get 15GB of free data, which still isn’t unlimited, but is the best free tier data cap offered by any VPN provider.
Windscribe provides access to ten servers for free-tier users across Europe, North America, and Asia and includes access to P2P and streaming services, even on mobile devices.
Paid plans are also available and start from $4.08 a month for a 1-year plan. It is possible to further reduce this price to just $2 a month if you use their unique “build a plan” feature and remove a few optional extras that you don’t need.
