Slack: How To Import an Email Into Slack

Slack: How To Import an Email Into Slack

Posted on February 7, 2021 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Even if your company uses Slack for internal communications, you likely have to deal with email when interacting with people outside of your company. If you get an important email that you need to share with people on your team, normally you would forward the email to everyone you wanted to show it to – however, Slack offers an alternative.

In your preferences, you can generate a Slack email address to which you can forward emails. Any emails that you forward to the email address will be imported into Slack and sent to you by Slackbot via private message. You can even share the generated email address, if anyone else forwards emails to it, you’ll receive those directly too.

To generate your unique Slack email import address, go into your preferences. To access your preferences, click on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then click on “Preferences”.

Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then click on “Preferences”.

Once in your preferences, switch to the “Messages & Media” tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. At the bottom, under “Bring emails into Slack” click “Get a forwarding address” to generate your unique Slack email import address.

Click “Get a forwarding address” in the “Bring emails into Slack” section of the “Messages & media” tab.

After a few seconds, you’ll see your generated address. Click the “Copy” button to the right of the email address, to copy the email address to your clipboard. If the email address is ever disclosed to someone without your permission, you can disable the address by clicking “Disable this address”, after which you will be able to generate a new one to replace it.

Click “Copy” to copy the generated email address to your clipboard.

By forwarding, or sending emails to the generated email address, you’ll receive a copy of the email via a direct message from Slackbot. In our testing, it took less than fifteen seconds for the message to arrive, although your experience may vary. Once you’ve received the private message from Slackbot you’ll be able to share it in other direct messages and channels in the workspace as you would any other file, by clicking the share button, then selecting where you want to share it.

Being able to import and share emails within Slack can be a useful feature. By following the steps in this guide, you’ll be able to generate a unique Slack email address that will import any email you send to it.
