Files that use the RVT file extension are Architectural Design files created with Autodesk’s Revit Building Information Modelling (BIM) software. RVT files contain full architectural details of projects, including 3D models, floor plans, and elevation details.
How can you open RVT files?
A number of Autodesk’s Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and BIM products can open and edit RVT files. Both online and offline tools exist that can convert RVT files into other CAD file formats.
What programs work with RVT files?
Revit is the main tool to create, open and edit RVT files, A trial version is available that can open RVT files for free. Autodesk’s AutoCAD Architecture software can also edit RVT files, like Revit AutoCAD is a paid tool with a free trial available. Autodesk Viewer is a free online tool that can view RVT files along with other similar formats, an account is required to view RVT files for free.
Revit can export RVT files as DWG, DXF or DWF file types depending on usage requirements. DWG is a binary formatted database of 2D or 3D designs created with AutoCAD containing vector image data and metadata. DXF is similar to DWG but uses an ASCII file format that can be opened with any text editor. DWF files contain a graphical representation of the architectural design but do not contain any technical specifications and are primarily meant for preview or printing purposes.
Navisworks can convert RVT files to their own NWD file format for use in their free Navisworks Freedom tool. The online tool “Revit to IFC” can convert RVT files to the open standard IFC format although this may take time with larger file sizes. RVT files can also be converted to the SKP format used by SketchUp with the rvt2skp tool.
