Roku Remote Control Doesn’t Work

Roku Remote Control Doesn’t Work

By Mitch Bartlett 24 Comments

After using my Roku video player for about 2 weeks, the remote suddenly stopped working. Here are the steps you can take if the same thing happens to you.

This tutorial assumes you have already ensured the batteries you are using with the remote have power.

  1. Open the battery cover on the back of the remote.
  2. Remove the batteries from the controller.
  3. Unplug the power cord to your Roku box.
  4. Wait about 10 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back unto the Roku box.
  6. Wait abut 60 seconds, then place the batteries back into the remote.
  7. Press and hold the the small “Pair“/”Sync” button below the battery compartment for about 3 seconds.
  8. Ensure the remote control is in range of the box. Once the device starts, the remote should re-sync and work again.

I’m not sure what was supposed to help. I saw a lot of comments which you folks apparently didn’t answer. Questions like my remote has absolutely no sync or pair button, what do I do? Answer: *sound of chirping crickets*. I have a sansui tv I am trying to hook up which is apparently a problem. What do I do? I have tried 2 different roku boxes, 3 different USB cords and 6 different HDMI cables all of which work on other tv, computers, phones etc but I can’t get a roku to work on my Sansui SLED2453W. How do I make roku work on this tv? (And yes, HDMI cableswork on this tv since I recently used it to hook my laptop to it to watch a movie played on my laptop, the tv works with an antenna and I can also play video games on it and the Roku boxes and remotes I’m using work on other tvs..) Please help!

I found the reset button on my Roku LT 2700x on the bottom of the box. Still can’t resynch the remote yet, but I’ll comment again maybe.

I did all the suggested steps, didn’t work, I bought a new remote, did all the suggested steps nothing. The only one I didn’t do was the one that tells you to go home screen to setting. Since the remote control won’t sink how was i supposed to do that.

I am beyond frustrated with my roku remote, there have been days that I have to go through the steps of repairing 3 or 4 times a day. Then there are times that I can go a day or two when it works. There has to be a permanent fix other than the app on my phone.

I tried the reset button, and now it won’t stop blinking and the remote still doesn’t work. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you get it stop blinking?

None of coments helped. Pair button for mine was on back of roku itself. Back there where all wires are on roku itself is a tiny hole very very little letters say “reset”. Please publish and forward so all those people who have nothing on or in remote can pair roku
    Thank you

Attention all roku users who are having trouble with remote. If you are one of those with no “buttons under batter” look on the roku box it is very tiny. But my box is approximately 3 inches long×1,inch thick and 1 in deep. It is on back of box in very tiny word reset. Take a paper clip or safety pin push gentle

Remote just won’t work, resorted to using the app on my iPhone. Has a lot of features, not extremely convenient, but works when the remote craps out!

I tried changing the batteries, unplugging the roku from the TV and the wall outlet, removing and replacing the batteries, pushing the sync button on the back of the remote, pushing the button on the roku stick, and NOTHING. won’t work. Very frustrated.
Now what? throw it in the garbage.? Help.

I have done what you suggested above. The remote has a green light that is now constantly flashing. A couple of times it stopped for a couple of seconds but starts flashing and is continuing. Changed batteries twice to make sure none were defective. I have the Roku stick, not the box.

I do not have a button on my remote to pair or sync, as well. What are we to do in this case.

Lately my remote just stops working even if it was working 20 minutes before. I have changed the batteries, paired the remote to the Roku 3 twice and have had to unplug the Roku 3 at least 4 times. All of these things work… for the moment. Before I know it, I’m having to do the entire process over again! And to top it off…my Roku in the living room started doing the same thing! Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem permanently? Or at least for 24 hours???

I am still in the dark along with many other ROKU remote owners who still have a useless remote because we do NOT have the special hidden sync button in the battery compartment. Every time one of us with these buttonless remotes makes this comment, we are ignored and the I guess the individuals who try to help just believe we are too stupid to find that little hidden button. Believe me! There are many of us out here who have remotes that do not have that sync button! Honest!! I wish someone could help us and stop repeating the fix that everyone should know by now if you have that secret button. I really would like my remote that came with the ROKU box to work again instead of having to rely on my wife’s smart phone to operate our ROKU. Thanks a million if you can actually help the large group of buttonless remote owners. Unfortunately I am not optimistic. Dennis Stewart

Yes very helpful…..especially since I have a Roku 2! and the little instruction booklet that came with it is long gone!

Open the battery cover. On newer remotes the button and green light are under the cover towards the bottom. Easy to find.
