A washing machine is generally an expensive piece of household tech. In most cases, you need to replace it with some urgency after an issue with your previous one. While it is common to simply go out and find something cheap that fits the bill. By doing your research, however, you may be able to find better products that offer features you hadn’t considered. In most cases paying more will also result in better products with longer warranties and lifespans too, lowering your long-term costs.

One of the more recent feature sets to appear in washing machines is smart functionality. The exact functionality varies from one device to another. Some can be controlled remotely via their own app, while others offer integrations with voice assistants and other smart home systems. Functionality such as load weight measuring can be used to automatically adjust the amount of detergent used in a cycle or how long a drying cycle runs for, in an effort to help save you money.

Smart washing machines offer a range of potential practicality features. To help you find the right one for you, we’ve drawn up our list of the best smart washers in 2022.

Key Features

  • Patented PowerFoam Technology
  • Dual washing drums
  • FlexWash system

Specifications

  • Capacity: 6 cu.ft
  • Lowest washing time: 30 minutes
  • Voice assistant support: Bixby, Alexa, Google Assistant

The Samsung FlexWash is a unique washing machine in that it can run two separate washing loads at once. It features a main, front-loading drum with a capacity of 5 cu.ft and a secondary top-loading drum with a capacity of 1 cu.ft. This dual drum design allows you to run two washes at once, with different settings. This is ideal if you have a lot of washing to go through as you can run a large wash and a smaller one at the same time, great for delicates or things that need to be washed on their own.

The PowerFoam technology injects water, detergent, and air through the holes in the drum to foam up the detergent for maximum coverage. With the superspeed setting enabled, the main drum can complete a standard wash in just 30 minutes. If you’ve ever struggled to see if there’s one sock still hidden in the drum, the interior light will help you find it. There’s a steam mode to pre-treat dirty loads. One thing to be aware of, however, is the high number of negative reviews. Many of these speak to technical problems both in and out of warranty and then of difficulties getting it warrantied or serviced.

Pros
  • Internal drum light
  • Fingerprint resistant finish
  • Energy Star Certified
Cons
  • User reviews speak of low reliability and poor customer service
  • Expensive

Key Features

  • Washer dryer pair
  • Integrated faucet
  • Extra Power button

Specifications

  • Capacity: 5.3 cu.ft
  • Lowest washing time: unlisted
  • Voice assistant support: Alexa, Google Assistant

The Maytag Smart Wash and Dry Combo is a pair of machines; a washer and a dryer designed to work together. They both feature an Extra Power button designed to help provide a deeper clean and a more powerful drying action. The washing machine features an integrated faucet to make manually pre-soaking items easier.

The Deep Fill settings allow you to specifically set more water to be used for larger washes. The top closing glass lid has a slow close design to prevent slams and damage. The dryer has a moisture sensor so it can accurately dry your loads. The asking price is pretty reasonable for a washer/dryer pair. The downsides are that a pair of devices take up more space and that some of the smart functionality requires a subscription to use.

Pros
  • Deep fill setting
  • Slow close lid
  • Moisture sensor
Cons
  • Subscription required for some features
  • Two separate devices

Key Features

  • 2-in-1 washeer dryer
  • Range of wash motions
  • Energy monitoring

Specifications

  • Capacity: 4.5 cu.ft
  • Lowest washing time: 37 minutes
  • Voice assistant support: Alexa, Google Assistant

The LG Wifi Washer Dryer is a 2-in-1 washer dryer combo. This combined design helps to save space, as well as time and effort moving washing to a separate dryer allowing the whole process to happen automatically. It has a 4.5 cu.ft capacity and has a range of six different washing cycle motions.

The smart functionality includes energy monitoring, as well as Alexa and Google Assistant integrations. The warranty isn’t groundbreaking but is decent. To help save water, the washer will automatically adjust the amount of water it uses based on the weight of the load. The price is quite high, unfortunately, and user reviews point to unusually long drying times.

Pros
  • Reasonable warranty
  • Automatic water levelling
Cons
  • User reports speak of long drying times
  • Expensive

Key Features

  • Twin Dos system
  • Tested for 20 years of use
  • Highest EU energy rating

Specifications

  • Capacity: Around 4.2 – 4.5 cu.ft
  • Lowest washing time: Unlisted
  • Voice assistant support: Alexa

The Miele W1 WSG663 is a German branded washer that may be difficult to get in the US. It features the highest energy efficiency rating on the EU energy efficiency scale. It’s designed to be reliable with the testing program simulating 20 years of use with 10000 hours of washing, that’s 5 hours of washes a week for 20 years. It also comes with a strong warranty, lasting a minimum of 2 years.

The drum has a honeycomb design and small inlet holes, that are designed to reduce the risk of clothes catching. A pause option works throughout the wash cycle allowing you to add or remove items. The Twin Dos system automates the process of adding detergent, using the weight of the load to calculate how much to add. It does lack a drying feature, however, meaning you’d need a separate dryer, at an extra cost.

Pros
  • Honeycomb drum designed to protect clothes
  • The pause option allows you to add or remove items
  • Strong warranty
Cons
  • Not easily available in the US
  • No drying feature
