One of the easiest ways to start your smart home experience is with a smart bulb. They’re simple yet convenient pieces of smart tech. Some of them are simply remotely controllable bulbs, many offer more though, such as the ability to dim the bulb, change the white temperature, and even select literally any colour. Not everyone wants all the features though, if you know what you want and what you don’t you can potentially save money. While you can choose to get particularly cheap models, you’re more likely to find better integrations and reliability if you spend a bit more money, without having to break the bank buying the market-leading Philips Hue bulbs.

To help you find the best reasonably priced smart bulbs out there, we’ve drawn up a list of the best mid-market smart bulbs in 2022.

Key Features

  • Hub-Free
  • 75W equivalent
  • 1100 Lumens

Specifications

  • Dimmable: Yes
  • Temperature range: 1800-6500K
  • Number of colours: 16 million

The Wyze Bulb Colour offers a solid feature set for a surprisingly low price, especially, if you purchase multipacks. It has a peak brightness of 1100 Lumens making it a 75W equivalent bulb. The bulb can be dimmed, colour set, and have a white temperature between 1800 and 6500K. The bulbs have an expected lifespan of 25000 hours, so you don’t need to worry about them breaking quickly.

The bulb can be dimmed down to just 30 lumens for when you want a simple night light. The integrated Wi-Fi is helpful as it means that you don’t need a hub, however, the lack of support for 5GHz Wi-Fi may make them a little frustrating to set up. The bulbs do lack some features that some other smart bulbs offer such as power usages stats and dynamic scenes like a flickering candle effect. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integrations should allow most people to control these via voice commands, however, there is no HomeKit support for Apple users.

Pros
  • 25000 hour lifespan
  • Available in multi-packs for a discount
  • Dimmable to just 30 lumens
Cons
  • No 5GHz Wi-Fi support
  • No lighting effects
  • No power usage stats

Key Features

  • Sun matching white mode
  • Adjustable pre-set colours
  • Energy usage stats

Specifications

  • Dimmable: Yes
  • Temperature range: 2500-6500K
  • Number of colours: 16 million

The Kasa Smart Full Colour Bulb is a colour changing and dimmable smart bulb. You can also configure the white temperature from 2500K to 6500K. The app features four preset colours that can be adjusted to your personal preference. It also offers a fifth sun matching preset that adjusts the white temperature throughout the day to match natural lighting.

Energy usage stats are a nice extra, you can even see a comparison of how much power you’ve saved vs a standard incandescent bulb, however, you can’t enter an energy price for a savings stat in dollars. With a max brightness of 800 Lumens, this is equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb while only using 7 watts. Unfortunately, the setup process is slow. The integrations are decent but don’t allow full control of the bulbs feature set. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integrations should allow most people to control these via voice commands, however, there is no HomeKit support for Apple users.

Pros
  • Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and Samsung SmartThings integrations
  • 800 Lumens
  • Uses just 7W
Cons
  • The setup process is slow
  • Integrations aren’t particularly feature rich

Key Features

  • Integrated Wi-Fi
  • 800 Lumens
  • 60W equivalent

Specifications

  • Dimmable: Yes
  • Temperature range: 2000-6500K
  • Number of colours: 16 million

The Sengled Smart Colour Changing Bulb is a particularly cheap and cheerful smart bulb. While it may not offer all the features more expensive bulbs do, it covers the basics and has some neat tricks. It reaches 800 lumens at peak brightness, can have the white temperature adjusted between 2000 and 6500K, and can be set to any colour. The app isn’t the most sophisticated but it’s functional and simple to use.

The bulbs are exceptionally well priced, though it’s worth looking around to see if it’s cheaper to buy them in multi-packs, at the time of writing, it costs just $2 more to get a pack of two than It does to get a single bulb. The lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi support is a common issue for smart devices. The Amazon reviews are also a bit lower for these than they are for the other products in this list but not so much to be too much of a cause for concern. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integrations should allow most people to control these via voice commands, however, there is no HomeKit support for Apple users.

Pros
  • Very well priced
  • Simple but functional app
Cons
  • No 5GHz support
  • The reviews are a bit lower than for competitors

Key Features

  • Filament style design
  • Retro aesthetic
  • 600 Lumens

Specifications

  • Dimmable: Yes
  • Temperature range: 2700K only
  • Number of colours: One

The Kasa Smart Filament Bulb White stands out from most smart bulbs by offering a unique appearance. Instead of having a frosted glass diffuser for even light distribution, it has clear glass and an exposed retro-styled set of filaments. This design gives a solid retro aesthetic and is ideal for use in exposed fittings, rather than being covered with a lampshade. The bulb is dimmable with a peak brightness of 600 lumens but it is fixed to a white temperature of 2700K and doesn’t offer any colour options.

Another version is available with a warmer 2000K white temperature, however, that bulb can only output 400 lumens, still good for aesthetics, but not really bright enough to use as a light. The integrated Wi-Fi is nice, though the standard lack of 5GHz support for smart devices may make set-up a little difficult. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integrations should allow most people to control these via voice commands, however, there is no HomeKit support for Apple users.

Pros
  • Available in a warmer, dimmer version
  • Ideal for exposed light fittings
  • Integrated wifi
Cons
  • Only 600 lumens
  • No colour or temperature options
  • No 5GHz support
