Smartwatches are one of those things that few people actually need, but that are definitely great fun to have. From fitness tracking functions to quickly being able to take a hands-free call (of sorts) they do offer a lot of potential uses. E-sim watches go one step further – where normal smartwatches need to connect to a phone to be usable, e-sim ones don’t.

They have their own sim plan, usually with data and text/call allowances. In other words, even if you forget your phone at home or it runs out of battery during the day. This makes them quite useful – in certain situations, anyway. As a small trade-off, LTE or E-sim watches have higher battery consumption, meaning they need to be charged more often. You may also have to pay extra for the watch sim plan, depending on your provider’s offered plans. If that doesn’t bother you, e-sim watches could be a pretty good gadget for you!

Key Features

  • O2 sat measure
  • Elevation tracking
  • Good 3rd party app selection

Specifications

  • OLED display
  • 1.57 inch display
  • Up to 18-hour battery life

As far as smartwatches go, the Apple Watch series is one of the better-known ones – not without reason. Apple’s smartwatches are solid choices in the market. A sturdy, reliable watch that isn’t too clunky, the Series 6 suits both men and women – it also offers some unusual features such as advanced medical tracking.

Most watches will be able to track heart rates and stress levels, but the Series 6 is also able to measure your O2 saturation and blood pressure, as well as various stats related to your sleep quality, making it a pretty attractive option. As with any Apple product though, it’s quite pricy, especially for the LTE model.

Pros
  • Great addition to an all-Apple setup
  • Good quality build
Cons
  • Limited usefulness with non-Apple phones etc
  • Pricy

Key Features

  • Body composition analysis
  • Stainless steel case with various strap options
  • Revamped OS

Specifications

  • AMOLED display
  • 1.2 inch/1.4 inch display
  • Up to 40-hour battery life

Samsung’s flagship watches weren’t always worth writing home about – however, the Galaxy Watch 4 is a solid entry into the market. Cheaper than the competing models from Apple, it offers functionality and customisation options that pretty much guarantee there’s something for everyone there.

Unlike previous models, the Watch 4 includes a set of bio-sensors that can be used to analyse things like BMI, body fat, ECG, PPG, and more – a pretty complete package of sensors, even if it isn’t as accurate as genuine medical testing equipment. The Watch 4 boasts solid battery life with a completely reworked OS that’s quite a huge improvement over previous generations – a solid choice in a busy smartwatch market.

Pros
  • Available in 2 size options – 40mm and 42mm
  • Fantastic compatibility with Samsung smartphones
  • Wide variety of styles, case colours, watch faces and straps
Cons
  • Battery life can be inconsistent
  • Body composition analysis can be imprecise

Key Features

  • Great haptic controls
  • Above average battery life
  • Sport-focused design

Specifications

  • AMOLED display
  • 1.4 inch display
  • Up to 50-hour battery life

A somewhat upgraded version of the first Active model, the 2 did make up on a few key issues its predecessor had – such as adding the popular rotating bezel from the main Watch line. It also offers pretty solid battery life, lasting a good two days on one charge. That’s worse than the first Active, but still several times what an Apple Watch can manage, for example.

Being somewhat sport-focused, the Active 2 is sturdy enough that you can comfortably exercise with it, and it can also track said exercise either manually or automatically. It does offer more workout functions and a full Samsung Health integration – for sporty users, it’s definitely a good option.

Pros
  • Features geared for active users
  • Light and solid build
Cons
  • Pricier than the previous model
  • Lack of 3rd party app support

Key Features

  • Dual-screen setup
  • Durable build
  • Chunky, masculine design

Specifications

  • AMOLED/FSTN dual-display
  • 1.4 inch display
  • Up to 3-day battery life

The TicWatch Pro has an unusual layered dual-display setup where the primary AMOLED panel switches off when not in use, revealing an always-on FSTN display that shows time, date, step count, and other basic info like that. It’s somewhat limited in usefulness as it doesn’t have backlighting, but it is a battery-saving always-on option that other watches generally lack completely.

The relatively thick and heavy watch is a fairly masculine-looking thing – competing models are thinner and overall more elegant, which may well be more appealing to users with slimmer wrists. When it comes to fitness features, the TicWatch Pro has a solid setup with lots of features and custom fitness apps that track exercise, heart rate, and sleep.

Pros
  • Solid, sturdy build
  • Quite a bit cheaper than competing flagship models
Cons
  • Masculine design
  • Always-on display doesn’t have backlighting

Key Features

  • Dual-screen setup
  • Solid battery life
  • Extensive fitness features

Specifications

  • AMOLED display
  • 1.2 inch display
  • Up to 40-hour battery life

The Huawei 2 is a feature-packed watch that does a little bit of everything – from fitness apps to always-on display options to a 4G connection, it offers a lot. This means that it makes some cutbacks as well – compared to other watches, it has a big case and bezels and a comparatively small screen.

For its price, however, it’s a solid model that offers more than enough value for most users. The battery life especially is unusually good. If you are looking to try out a smartwatch without wanting to drop hundreds on a flagship Android/Apple one, this one is a great choice – though if you are looking for a specific, specialised function, you may be better off with a model that focuses on that.

Pros
  • Solid smartwatch with GPS, NFC, and 4G connectivity
  • Huge number of features
  • Available for less than $180
Cons
  • Small screen
  • Big bezels/case
  • Excessive number of features leads to mediocrity in some areas
