Office 2016 & 2013: How to Enable or Disable DEP Mode

Office 2016 & 2013: How to Enable or Disable DEP Mode

By Mitch Bartlett 4 Comments

DEP or Data Execution Prevention mode can cause problems within some applications, but may be required for certain features to work. Here’s how to enable or disable DEP mode in each Microsoft Office 2016 or 2013 application.

Note: Only the 32-bit versions of Microsoft Office will have DEP setting options. 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office will always have DEP enforced and will not have this option.

Outlook

  1. Select “File” > “Options“.
  2. Select “Trust Center” > “Trust Center Settings…”
Outlook 2010 Trust Center Settings button
  3.  Select “DEP Settings” on the left pane. You can check “Enable Data Execution Prevention” mode to turn it on, or uncheck it to turn it off.

Word, Excel, Publisher, and Access

  1. Select “File” > “Options“.
    Word Options selection
  2. Select “Trust Center” > “Trust Center Settings…“
    Office Trust Center Settings
  3. Select “Protected View“, then check “Enable Data Execution Prevention mode” to turn it on, or uncheck it to turn it off.

I think the problem is that Office 2016 must be run in Data Protection Mode — hence no way to turn it off. I even went into the Windows 10 control panel | System | Advanced | Performance and then the Data Execution Protection tab. If check “Turn on DEP for all programs…. except those I select:” and then pick winword.exe, you get a message that this program requires Data Execution Protection to run.

Yes, I have the same situation in Excel 2016 Academic version (32bit). All the listing for Protected view pertain to files from Internet, unsafe locations, and from Outlook attachments. No option to toggle DEP for the Excel.exe itself. However the error 0xe0000002 occurs every time I close Excel and it then begins to reopen. Very annoying and time consuming…not to mention confidence destroying! This is rather new behavior from Excel – recent in the last 2 months, I’d say.
A promising fix was to disable DEP. So, once again, how can this be done, please?

For your info – I am using Office 2016 Home and Business 2016 (v1703 build 7967.2139). In ‘Trust Center’ settings, I’ve got Trusted Publishers, Privacy Options, Email Security, Attachment Handling, Macro Settings and Programmatic Access, but there is no DEP settings-entry listed.
In Word there is a protected view and the first three items are listed, the Enable Data Execution Prevention is missing though…
