The Nubia Red Magic 5G is one of the few phones that offer a lot for such a competitive price. This phone is the successor to the Red Magic 3, and it shows as it competes with the latest models by having blazing specs, a 144Hz LED display, and 8K video recording. The price starts at $540, half of what is currently in the market with similar features. Here is the review of this unique phone.

This sleek design captures the essence of a gamer. It comes in three colors, and the most interesting design is the Pulse, which has a two-tone color design, red and blue. On the left, it has a dedicated gamer mode slider, an intake grill, and an accessory connector for accessories available on the website. On the right, it has two shoulder buttons, a power button, a volume rocker, and an exhaust grill. On the back, there is an LED strip and an LED symbol that can be controlled in the settings. It has a built-in fan to keep the phone cool during gaming or other intense activities. On the top, there is a headphone jack, and on the bottom, it has a USB-C connector and SIM card slot.
Like any other phone in this price range is that this phone has a 1080p panel, but what is not so common is that it has a 144Hz refresh rate, blowing the competition out of the water. This high refresh rate makes it a breeze when playing a high fps game, scrolling through webpages, or playing high framerate videos. The refresh rate is variable and can also be turned down to either 90Hz or 60Hz in the settings to save battery life. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, but it’s not the most reliable scanner as it is hit-or-miss most of the time.
This phone is built for a gamer, and it shows as it has the latest Snapdragon 865 processor, which can handle any game or app that is thrown at it. It has a dedicated gamer mode that gives a console-like experience, and the games to choose from are at the front and center, and when swiping from the right, the fan speed, the refresh rate, and the shoulder buttons can be controlled, and has dual stereo speakers, for an improved gaming experience. It runs on Redmagic 3.0 software, it’s based on android, and it performs consistently during everyday use. This phone has 5G connectivity and has support for all the standard sensors like ambient light, gyroscope, proximity, etc.
Admittedly, the camera on this phone is nothing to write home about. This phone has a three-camera setup, a 64MP camera, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro camera with the main sensor being capable of shooting up to 8k at 30fps. The videos shot are smooth but very over sharpened, and the photos from any lens lack detail and dynamic range. The front camera is surprisingly decent as it is an 8MP camera, and it can shoot up to 1080p at 30fps, which is fine. It’s disappointing that the camera is not reliable, given that it’s a feature-rich phone.
Battery and Charging
This phone has a 4500mAh battery, which is lower than the previous-gen devices. It comes with an 18W fast charger and is capable of blistering 55W fast charging, but the adapter has to be purchased separately. If the phone is always on 144Hz, then the battery will last for about a day with a mixture of gaming and video playback, but if reduced to 90Hz or even 60Hz, it can even last for more than a day.
In the end, this phone is recommended for people who love performance and gaming with its top of the line specs. The camera is average, but that might not be as important for their target audience. Also, this phone would be great for everyday use if you enjoy the aesthetic. This is an excellent phone featured at a great price.
