Norton Security Deluxe – Software Review

If you wish to keep your device systems free of virus and malware, this is your ultimate pick. It is one of the most reliable antivirus software available on the market right now. It is a product that offers protection to multiple systems which are interconnected in a typical home. One of the biggest features of this software is versatility.

The product has outperformed its competitors in numerous tests that were conducted before its launch. It was the winner of AV – TEST’s Award for Best Protection and has been a recipient of the PC Magazine Editor’s Choice Award a whopping 39 times.

Note: If you already use a Norton Product, your existing subscription does not apply to this new one. It is better to invest in a new subscription.

  • Installation

After the purchase, a physical activation code will be sent to the registered email address. Once the code is entered, the option to select ‘PC or Mac Download’ pops up. After selecting one of the options, the software will download. In case of a technical issue with the installation, there is 24*7 tech support available.

  • Made for Home

Norton Security Deluxe can manage 5 devices from one portal; making it a convenient choice for all your home computers. It comes with parental controls which help users block inappropriate content by filtering through various categories such as violence, alcohol, pornography, gaming, etc. Parents can even set the duration of internet access available to their children.

  • Interface

It has a user-friendly, clean and simple interface. It uses a single portal for 5 devices. Its feature “My Norton” keeps track of the deployment of licenses and warns when expiry is pending. There is no need for a CD while deploying this software for devices.

Norton Interface

The interface design of Norton Deluxe and Premium are similar and are very easy to use for first-timers. The incorporated features are effectively described, and easy access is given for use of all of them.

The one disadvantage of Deluxe is that it can only cover the security of up to 5 devices whereas the Premium is one step up with its service spanning up to 10 devices. Deluxe is still an excellent choice for the small-scale user/family who wants security for a few PCs at the house or office.

One good thing about Norton Deluxe or for that matter, any Norton product is that once you install it, it does not disturb you with popups. The interruptions are minimal, and it only notifies the user when something essential needs to be addressed.

The key feature of the interface has been the same for years now with it showing the current status of the user’s PC is at the top of the window. If it displays, ‘You are Protected’, then the software is being effective in keeping your system secure.

  • Security

Norton Security Deluxe aids to secure your systems by blocking the files that hold a potential threat. It protects the computer and its crucial information from cyber criminals who could steal confidential information. It also blocks scammers who are shopping online. A personal firewall is included.

The ‘Security’ layout seen below is where the security scans are run. One can also see the history of the scans run on the PC and access some advanced features such as enabling the enhanced firewall, email browser protection, etc.

The ‘Performance’ section shows the count of the overall CPU usage along with the CPU usage by Norton specifically; it essentially outlines how the overall system is performing.

The ‘More Norton’ section contains a list and prices of extra software that are available from the company.

Test Runs and Results

The tests that were run in September and October 2018 earned the company a 100% rating for catching threats that included even email and web in a sample size of 300. Another large test for malware protection was conducted in October and November of the same year with a sample size of 21,000 and they scored 100% as well.

Considering its security service in the real world, Norton has helped block 99% of the sample threats to which it was exposed. For the same test in September 2018, it showed a 99.5% online detection and a 100% online protection rate. It also showed 47 false alarms.

Updates

Norton has a built-in update detection system which scans the software installed on the computer, identifies its version and installs the latest version available automatically. Alternatively, one can visit the Norton Update Center online to download the same.

If you are running the Norton software on a mobile device, the auto scan feature will be enabled except for devices produced by Samsung. But note that the user must be enrolled in the automatic renewal service of Norton for updates.

Final Verdict

Norton Security Deluxe is like its previous versions. The company stuck with its basic interface and feature list but optimized it to provide better service. Do not expect any flashy or explosive services from Norton, you will get the same solid product with similar pricing for the 2019 version.

If you are already a user of Norton, there is no reason whatsoever to switch to any other security provider. But if you have been using other companies, it is worth your time to consider the excellent product from Symantec.
