Best Mobile “Walkie-Talkie” Apps

Posted on February 3, 2020 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

Although phones already come with communication functionality built in, there might be cases where you can’t just make a phone call or send someone a text the normal way. Whether you’ve maxed out your minute and text allowances or you just don’t trust the Facebook-owned WhatsApp – there is an app for that! As a matter of fact, there are lots. Communication apps or walkie talkie apps are the ideal choice for both couples who just want to play spy around the house and people who want to chat without needing to use their actual phone number and minutes. Below are some of the best walkie talkie apps you can find.

Zello – Free – 50M+ Downloads

Zello is an impressive all-round communications app. Its main feature, the push to talk walkie talkie functionality, has high-quality audio and while it requires a WiFi or mobile data connection it can work on even a 2G network. Public and private voice channels are available that allow thousands of users at once, messages are saved in a voice history and notifications can be pushed to your device when you have a new message.

Intercom (Infinite iNtercom) – Free (Android), $2 (iOS) – 1M+ Downloads

Intercom is a simple, no-frills walkie-talkie app. It doesn’t use mobile data at all, you just have to be within Bluetooth range or on the same wifi network for it to work. You never have to sign up or register your phone number to use it either, making it great for people who dislike giving out their personal info. Intercom works cross-platform allowing data free voice group calls to anyone on the same WiFi network.

Voxer – Free – 10M+ Downloads

Voxer includes a wide range of options allowing voice, text and video chats. Voice messages are saved and can be replayed, you can even create messages while offline to send when you have an internet connection again. A key feature of this app is that the private chat messages are sent with end-to-end encryption via the respected Signal Protocol so you can be sure that no-one is listening to your private messages.

HeyTell – Free – 10M+ Downloads

HeyTell is a great free option that supports Android, iOS and even Windows Phone (for that one friend). You don’t need to create an account, anyone that has your contact details from Facebook, email or phone contacts can be imported. HeyTell is privacy conscious, you can choose a low privacy mode so any of your contacts can message you, but you can also select high privacy meaning no-one can contact you before you accept an invite, a useful feature for those with hundreds or thousands of Facebook friends. Reasonably priced micro-transactions are available unlocking extra features such as a voice changer and emoji.
