macOS: How to Set Default Browser

macOS: How to Set Default Browser

By Mitch Bartlett 1 Comment

Set Safari, Firefox, Chrome, or any browser as the default for macOS Sierra using these steps.

Option 1 – From System Preferences

  1. Select the Apple Menu, then choose “System Preferences…“.
  2. Choose “General“.
  3. In the “Default web browser:” section, set the desired browser.

Option 2 – From Browser Settings

Each browser provides an option to set the default browser in macOS.

  • Chrome – “Menu” > “Settings” > “Make Google Chrome the default browser“.
  • Safari – “Safari” > “Preferences” > “General” > “Set Default…“.
  • Firefox –  “Menu” > “Preferences” > “General” > “Make Default“.
  • Opera – “Opera” > ” Preferences” > “Browser” > “Make Opera my default browser“.

Thanks. But a slightly different question, concerning the Preview application that comes with MacOS.

It seems that Preview ignores my MacOS browser choice. It always opens Safari as the browser.

    How to reproduce the effect:
Install Chrome browser, and set it as the default browser, per above instructions.
Open a text-based PDF in Preview, and highlight a bit of text. Right-click the highlighted text and get a context menu, which includes an option to “Search with Google”. Choose that option.
Safari launches, with the google search in place. Safari is launched, regardless of MacOS preferences.

I want Chrome to launch, not Safari. I do not see any place in Preview to set the preferences there.

    Anybody know how?
