What Are M4P Files?

M4P is an Apple variant of the AAC audio file format that includes Apple’s “Fairplay” copy protection DRM. M4P and the related M4A format are an iTunes Music Store audio files, M4P includes the copy protection, whereas the M4A format does not.

How can you open M4P files?

Only authorised software, signed in to the correct account can play the DRM protected M4P files. Online and downloadable file converters are available that can convert M4P files into DRM free audio file formats, such as MP3, M4A, WAV and more.

What programs work with M4P files?

iTunes and Apple’s now-defunct QuickTime Player, are the only programs that can play M4P audio files. The computer is required to be one of up to five computers authorized to play audio from the account that downloaded the M4P file.

FileZigZag is an online file converter that can convert M4P files into other DRM free audio file types, such as MP3. TuneClone is a program that can be downloaded to convert M4P files into MP3’s, although the trial version only allows converting the first three minutes of audio from any single M4P file.
