What Are M3U Files?

Posted on December 18, 2019 by Mel Hawthorne Leave a Comment

M3U files are Audio Playlist files. The extension stands for MP3 URL and isn’t an actual audio file in and of itself. Instead, it’s a type of file that points to an audio or video file. These files are used to queue files for playback by a media player of some sort.

M3U files are text-based and contain URL-like path names to files, folders and the like.

How can you open M3U files?

Most types of media players can use and open this type of file. They will work as intended. Additionally, they can also be opened and edited with text editors, as they are text files, however they aren’t able to call the music the way a music player would.

What programs work with M3U files?

Software like VLC and Windows Media Player are able to run these files. Winamp, iTunes and Audacious can as well. Any sort of text editor such as Notepad++ or Sublime 3 can also open and edit these files.
